Here is a request - anyone know Jonathan Gill, I know he owned a black S type from April '92 in the US. This bike is now residing in the UK and looking very nice, wearing low miles, very original now - but has seem some major engine work in back in 1972 suggesting despite it being low miles they may have been hard miles.

Do you have a date of assembly from the red chassis plate? The black tanks were not offered as a standard production fitment on the "S" at any time. Advertising literature show only Fireflake Red and Blue as the only available options on the "S"; however, one '70 flyer shows one in yellow but I cannot confirm that any were ever built. I have a copy of a paint chart that is indicated as being 1970 that shows availability of black but only on the Roadster model so a "special substitution" order for a Commando with black tank and side panels as an "S" could only have come late in the production period (generally thought to be March '69 - June '70).

You mention "April 72" as a date. That is not the production date for that motorcycle is it?

I'm quite intrigued about the possibility of a black "S". (Oddly enough, an owner in the US has requested the factory records for his "S" and they show that it was one of the last ones made -- and it was dispatched to Berliner in "Emerald Green" which is never shown in any literature as being available on the "S". I'd love to have the opportunity to delve into the detailed history from those days.)

(Sorry about the necroposting, but this caught my curious eye.)
