Invisible Patterns paint protection - headlight lens

The paint protection kit for the 961 includes film for the clocks and the headlight lens.

I thought I saw a post about the headlight lens overheating and warping if it is covered with the plastic film, but I can't find any such post. Has anyone used this film on the headlight?

Had’nt heard of this full kit, just a few on FB using the tank protector items.

Some feedback would be great on just how well they fit. I’d certainly be interested in the tail unit related items.

Used film on mine for some time now without issue. As long as you're not running with lights on or full beam for MILES on end it'll be fine. Zero issues with mine. Even if I did have issues, I'd just replace it as a metre of the stuff was less than £10 and I only used a tiny bit. Got tons left.

Quite like the vintage headlight look Kev - can you post reference to the film that you’re using! Thanks.

Another option for us fatally flawed fettlers!

I don't use full beam but the headlight is on all the time and I could do up to 200 miles on a run. It's not the film I'm concerned about it's the plastic headlight lens, as I thought I'd read that it could overheat and warp if covered with the film.

When you say riding for not a long time how long do you normally ride for, I like to stretch the old girls legs sometimes and can be going for three or four hours at a time. The UK road regs say your headlight can be white or yellow, but is the vision still good enough at night with the yellow tint, personally I don't think much of the original headlight pattern that's why I put a Cibie reflector in my shell . Obviously our French cousins managed all these years but after all they are Johnny foreigners. It will certainly be easier on the eyes of the oncoming traffic.

I used the 3-piece tank kit on my CR a few years ago and it was relatively straightforward. The tank pad was the more fiddly bit due to its shape, but once fitted it was virtually invisible. I don't think they did the full kit at that time.

I was interested in the full kit for my new SP as I'm now struggling to lift my leg over the seat cowl and was worried that I'm going to scuff it. Fitting the film over the cowl was a real pig, trying to stretch a flat piece of film over that curve without it bunching up and creasing..... I reckon I spent a good 15 minutes on it. I got it flat in the end but it's not invisible due to a few marks that I caused. At least the marks are on the film and not the paintwork.

A photo of the SP cowl, it's difficult to get a clear picture of the black. Also a link to photos of the CR tank:

Looking good Comet. Well worth getting hold of some 3M PPF sheet as well and protecting those gold fork legs. They are prime for deep stone chips. Wrapped mine years ago and not a mark since.

Also the rear of your airbox, before it starts to resemble the surface of the moon.

Headlight looks simple enough to achieve, but effective - next to the gold forks👍.

I like the traditional glass light unit myself. The OEM plastic light unit is easily replaced. The OEM plastic light unit is really not very good , some may call it junk.
Same with the Norton VDO instruments , not very good. VDO view-line .. I can’t get a VDO dealer to work on mine , he calls them disposable. He said to order another one. So here is another part I probably won’t be able to order. Now you would think for a premium bike they would give us Good clocks . So before you ask I will tell you what’s happening to my tach . The sweep needle center round black plastic cap is loose and looks like it wants to fall off. The Speedo is still ok. Needs to be glued back on I suppose. If somebody know where to get these fixed please let me know. Thanks.

Tony try these guys .https://www.nhspeedometer.com/ They are local to me and have worked wonders on other gauges in the past, and I know they work on VDO. The problem with the 961 gauges is that they are made as a "sealed" unit. You can also try Bob's Speedometer in Michigan

One of these is on my ‘almost-certainly-may-do-possibly’ modifications-list (extended edition)! 🙃

Looked at it a few times when pondering the parasitic drain and after seeing Stu’s Dommie. Solves multiple problems.

Only put off by the wiring issue really, although I have’nt looked at that closely. Mounting shouldn’t be an issue; multiple brackets available.

German clocks on a British bike though - Ach!😲 Current ones are French though I suppose - sacrebleu…….!

That’s exactly what I was looking at when I made the changes in the pic above. Price, wiring and brackets put me off slightly so happy to hear your thoughts on a solution if you have any links, etc

It’s not a cheap mod Kev but worthwhile if the bike’s a keeper I think, as mine is.

I’m looking at the Chronoclassic 1 or 2 (10,000 RPM/ polished ring). Nice unit - classic look but with plenty of digital info. Stu’s Dommie unit is the Chromoclassic 1 I think.

There are a few brackets on the market - Stu’s one here is a Motogaget item I think and looks great to my eye - bolts straight on it appears.

Wiring I haven’t really looked at, so would be the main sticking point for me. May get my local guy to do this if it gets complicated. Not sure whether additional sensors are required, nor how the control of the didgital inputs is managed. More research required.

I’m gonna fit adjustable clip-ons next, to sort the ergos out on my instrument of torture. Also looking again at fitting the Thruxton fairing. Both complicate this mod, but are ‘slow burn’ projects so no big deal. Let us know what your thoughts are.

Don’t know of anyone but Stu who’s done this mod which is surprising, given with the difficulty the OEM clocks have presented over the years.

I believe this is a Domiracer gauge holder. Domiracers only had one gauge

I’ve mapped out all the electrics so that doesn’t concern me. I’m more interested mounting options. Can only find one universal mount.

Do you have any links?

I have the full invisiblepatterns paint protection kit on my bike including the headlight lens. I have not had any issues with the headlight lens. What I do get sometimes, and I do not know if this is anything to do with the invisiblepatterns kit, is in very hot weather my clocks get condensation on the inside when parked up in the sun but this disappears very quickly once riding the bike.

Yep, hadn’t looked closely enough Kev - cursory search seemed to show options. Incorrectly assumed that the mount on Stu’s bike was Motogadget - from the Domiracer apparently. Little or no chance of getting one of those, although you might contact Stu.

I’m sure you’ve seen these - the Chronoclassic has its own mounting cup which interfaces with three universal mounting plates. Should’nt be too difficult to utilise the most suitable if selecting that model.

IMG_2820.jpeg IMG_2819.jpeg IMG_2818.jpeg

Chronoclassic 2 - similar cup but with only one universal mounting plate. Again, pretty simple task to bend, drill, cut,

IMG_2823.jpeg

There’s also some bike specific mounting plates that may fit of could be modified to do so. Nothing specifically for the 961 unsurprisingly. These are for Beemers. Not ideal but shouldn’t present too much difficulty.

Any info on the electric's would be useful👍.
