6-8 Week lead time before it gets here. I may get it clear wrapped on arrival, still on the fence about it. Anyone do the swap yet? Hoping its an easy transplant but you never know.

I have. The install is easy and same as the plastic tank just minus one breather hose.

Yes, very easy swap. Don’t worry if the screws are not exactly at same distance from each other. The battery and coil mount shows enough flexibility to adapt. I just had to put rubber washers under the screw on the left side so that tank got centered around oil filler nozzle.
If you change to a Monza cap you may have to find a matching sealing gasket and close the vent hole if there is one in the cap (glue helps). Otherwise you might get fuel spilling...

Just a safety note because if it happened once it could happen again:

When they sent my dads tank they forgot to put any battery protection. So my dad glued leather on the underside of the tank so the battery couldn’t short out by accident.

No battery protection in my tank either.
Is there a real risk of short out? I should check when I remove it next time though...

If the battery were to short out against the tank, it could melt a hole right into it.

Great Photo of the underside of the tank . That shows everything that he needs to see. (me too) . I heard there was brass fittings for the overflow/vent ? What's the black material in the battery area ?

I think the Shorai battery has a protection itself, but I will fit a protection to the tank to be with belt and braces...
Up to now no hole in the tank:rolleyes:

That’s a foam liner to protect the tank from making contact to the battery and shorting out.
Both of my aluminum tanks came with this foam. Others say some do not have it. Make sure you have it and if not install it.

When you install the aluminum tank you have one brass barb fitting. The plastic tank has two hoses. The aluminum tank just one hoes is needed.

I agree.
I also have the Shorai batteries. Figment is smaller than the original battery but the shorai comes with foam padding to fit to the battery holder / battery to help snug it up.

The craftsmanship on the Al tanks is beautiful.
Does anyone know where the tanks are actually manufactured?

Is the aluminum tank the same size and shape as the plastic commando tank or different?

A bit different, at least inside cause it takes about 3 to 4 litres more...
But the holes fit on the Commando 961

I kept thinking the same thing . That when you look at the aluminum tank it seems so much larger . We took a cloth tape measure at Cootes and found externally the tanks measure the same size. It must be the brilliant shine of the aluminum that makes it seem so big. And the shape if not the same is nearly identical. Length and width the same. But more room for gas inside . 4 liters is a lot more gas !

I would think the gauge of aluminum used in the metal tank is thinner than the thickness of nylon/plastic used in the nylon tanks.
Than can account for some of the increased internal volume.
