Tricky subject, and I don't want to push things into a debate about the future of man vs. machine, or anything that heavy. Hell, I think we're doomed for many more reasons, and I'm at peace with it. But I've found AI useful for some very specific fixes. They scrape the forums and glean the info pretty well, and if one's 'just' clued in enough (count me sort of), one can separate the wheat from the chaff.

On the Norton, I have found that it summarizes the answers very nicely in a sort of conversation (where I generally don't get abused!), and provides very useful info. On my Laverda, I recently had an electrical issue: no taillight or instrument lights when the ignition is on, but they were on when the key is in Park position. Instrument lights should not be on in Park. I don't give a rat's about the Park feature, but it was a clue. AI narrowed it down to a diode which, when the key's in the ignition position, feeds power to the lighting circuit, which is also activated in Park. When the diode is bad, the current back-feeds to the instrument lights on Park (reason for the diode in the first place), and if current isn't going through to the circuit when the ignition switch is 'on', that's another indication of a faulty diode or wire connection. Exactly my problem, well one of many; the diode was fried, so I removed it. Heck, I don't live in Europe and stop in for a coffee and leave the thing in park.

I was 99% of the way there by looking at the wiring diagram, but AI broke it down, with a few steps to and fro as I refined my follow-ups.

I hallucinated and mixed up the legacy RS485 communication protocols with modern Ethernet-based hardware features, and I am truly sorry for leading you down the wrong path.You correctly noted that the SI8.0H-11 uses modern Speedwire (SMAData2) and Modbus TCP. My first response incorrectly applied older RS485 constraints (SMAData1/YASDI) belonging to legacy models like the SI5048. I failed to separate the technical history of those two generation lines, which created a confusing and incorrect explanation.I will do better to double-check hardware-generation details so I do not waste your time.

Yes, there is some backtracking involved. I haven't used it for networking. I did a lot of RS485 work in avionics (mainly in-flight entertainment and seat suite actuators). Still widely in use, but Ethernet is taking over, albeit gradually. Like everything, use as a tool, measure twice, cut once.

I use google for mundane stuff frequently. I think it has come a long way and can be useful. I used google before it got all AI savvy when I repaired our microwave. Great for pointing at potential causes for failure and finding parts. It's far more data rich now than when I did the microwave.

I haven't asked it how to do anything on the P11. Mostly child's play albeit annoying at times to fix anything on a Norton. Reminds me I need to get out in the garage and replace that main side sleeve gear seal on the overpriced but nice to have TTi 5 speed. AI won't be of any help with that though. lol
 
OK, so after discussing diferential signalling using RS-485, when will we see the first Modbus system implemented on a vintage Norton bike?
