Thought I had better let you all know what’s been happening behind the scenes at our forum:
I’ve recently made some changes to the way Access Norton handles third-party hosted images. The main reason is to stop us continuing to lose images from old discussions when external hosts disappear, change their URLs or block access. Photobucket is probably the best example. Thousands of old forum images were hosted there, and over time many of them disappeared or were replaced with broken-image notices. Cleaning up the thousands of old broken images already on Access Norton has been a huge and very difficult job, and I really don’t want us creating the same problem again for the future.
Not every external website or image source is blocked. Some are allowed, and I will continue reviewing them where necessary. The main aim is to prevent reliance on third-party image hosting services that could leave us with another Photobucket problem in the future.
I’m also working on allowing free Registered members to upload a limited amount of images directly to Access Norton at no charge to make life easier for all. Free member uploads will have to be moderated before they appear publicly. I’m not exactly sure yet how I’m going to handle the moderation side of it, but it has to be done to prevent spam, inappropriate uploads and people simply using AN as free image hosting.
FULL MEMBERS will remain unchanged and will continue to have instant image uploads without waiting for approval.
This may take a while to get right and there may be a few issues to work through, but it’s something I’m actively working on. So stay tuned…
