Hello ,

Someone recognize this ignition module ?
I search the wiring diagram but no label on it

Thanks !

It seems that without ES it work fine , what do you think ?

It probably did when new, but considering the Rita AB5 is now 25-30 years old, the electronics within is probably faulty and if not, at least unreliable. AB5 units are not serviceable according to AO services, and for the money required to service one, you'd be better off buying a modern unit.

And what are your advice for modern unit ?
It's a 850 mkIII cafe racer without Electrical starter and battery

Never had a problem with a Rita unit unlike Boyer

There is a lot of talk in past threads about electronic ignitions here. Do a search. For known reliability I would use a Pazon, I have one and it's never given any trouble. I also have a Tri-spark of the older kind with the brain in the timing cover. I like it a lot but as many here I have had one fail.. It was replaced for free and seems to be fine but I haven't used it much yet.

I have a similar system in my Commando, works fine. but don't take my word for it, according to this guy who has far more knowledge of this subject than I have, the Lucas Rita systems are the best in the business. Do you also have the rotor and pick-up unit ?

Maybe was the best in the business at one time, as Pazon, Tri-Spark, Power Arc, Sachse, etc. simply weren't around then.

Electrex World, Uk do a modern electronic system with a built in alternator.

TK-102D- Digital Lighting/Ignition Alternator Kit

Price: £235.00 / €277.30
(£282.00 / €332.76 Including VAT at 20%)

Hi,
My proposal is Pazon Altair, which is a simple, reliable and compact system backed by a 7.5 year warranty.
It works well at even low system voltage.
I'd also fit a 12V dual-output coil with a primary resistance of 3 to 4.5 Ohm, as recommended by Pazon.

Please enquire with Pazon about running this set-up in a battery-less environment.
Lucas does not recommend running RM alternators less battery ....

Interesting stuff, not seen these before.

A quick google seemed to find a lot of noise about problems.

Anyone used this stuff?

Nigel,
I have Electrex ignition/lighting on my B44 Victor
It works just fine, not so sure it would be for a Commando though as the alternator output is only 50 watts if I recall correctly, though suppose it would be fine for a daytime bike only.

My experience with the Pazon Altair is nothing short of admiration, but, as Knut noted, there's a question on whether or not it will run battery-less. Unable to find any mention of such in their web site. If you get an answer from them, please post to the group.

The electric world ignition is triggered at the crank not the cam so should be accurate but as previously stated the alternator is tiny.

just a bit of a nudge here, has any members actually fitted one of these Electrex-World kits?

TK-102D- Digital Lighting/Ignition Alternator Kit

I'm not having much luck getting info from ElectrexWorld so I put my question to the members here.
If you look at the wiring diagram and their info in their link above, I cant see why their reg/rect can not be replaced with a "normal" one
so all AC generated power is converted to 13-14v DC for the battery. The ignition side of their system seems to be unrelated to the charging system.
I realize that the generator still is only around 50w, but thats not my concern.
your thoughts gentlemen
Don

well I asked Electrexworld if it was possible to convert the total 50-60w output to DC via a different reg/rect and they said
there wasnt much they could do with that unit, not sure why but good news
"We are unable to do much with the current system but we are developing a new ignition/generator for your Norton – 3 phase; 150 – 200W 100% DC
We hope to have this available in the next 2-3 months."
I hope to be early on the list for that one, exactly what I'm after.
