How to recognize if an alternator is single phase or three phase?
I have two alternators, the first with just two cables, the other with three cables including two coupled together: say something this difference?.
Thanks.

Single-phase has 6 poles visible inside the "bore" of the stator and the three-phase has 9.

A stator with three wires doesn't necessarily mean it is three-phase, and if two are apparently joined (green/yellow & green/black?), then it is unlikely to be three-phase. Are there any numbers stamped on the metal stator frames?

Re: How to recognize if an alternator is single or three ph

Dear Les,
my three LUCAS alternators have all six poles inside but not the same numbers.
One has n. 47205A1070, 2 wires;
Second has n. 47204, 3 wires;
Third, no number, 2 wires .
May be the 47205 is a 12 VOLT, 10 AMP ?
If i mount a new Boyer powerbox maybe is better to buy a new alternator? but is better 1 or 3 phases, and how much AMP?, in case, please, let me have a name of the new alternator's company.
Regards.
Ciao.
Piero

RM21 stator = Standard Commando.

RM 19 = Pre-Commando. 6V Stator. When the green/yellow and green/black stator wires are connected, it operates as a 12V two wire stator.

Pattern? RM21? RM23?

Yes. RM21

If you expect to do a lot of low speed riding or have a brighter than standard headlamp or additional electrical accessories then perhaps a three-phase alternator may be worth considering, however, the RM21 may prove perfectly adequate?

Replacements are available from "Lucas", Sparx, or Wassell.

Now I am confused :!:

I thought that all alternators were of 3 phase output, otherwise why have they got to have a rectifier fitted to convert the electric output to 12 volts :?:

Why do you think that?

You seem to be confusing three-phase with AC, as it's the the rectifier's job to convert AC (Alternating current) to DC (Direct current).

Thanks for pointing this out LAB, as you may appreciate I am not an electrical boffin :!: :shock:

Re: How to recognize if an alternator is single or three ph

The rectifier converts AC single phase (two winding wires - or dual phase (3 winding wires) phase) to DC. A regulator then sets the voltage. These functions are usually combined in a single device but they are two different operations. First the alternator's AC voltage is converted to DC by the rectifier and then the output DC voltage is adjusted by the regulator. If it was not regulated, the voltage would rise uncontrollably with RPM and burn out the elec system.

I am fully aware of the AC & DC output, but I have another question regarding the later 2 wire alternators, to achieve the higher watts output, do they wind extra copper windings around the coils :?:
