I imagine someday that will be the case, for sure. I really don't think it's far from being on the road again, so there's that at least. We mostly rebuilt it together before it fell off the to-do list, it just has a few gremlins (and now some maintenance from sitting) that needs handled. I just need to keep bugging my dad to finish it lol
Yes, make a plan and git 'er done--time is flying by. A good friend of mine has a 1950's Triumph nacelle twin that he has been "getting to" since 1985. Sadly, it is still in boxes and buckets today.:rolleyes:

Yeah, at this point it's a matter of talking dad into doing it..he's retired, and he/mom own it now. lol

I'm sure if I offered to spend a bit of time helping get it finished, that would probably help. I haven't been leaving my house much lately :\

I probably shouldn't have moved on to new hobbies (pinball) along the way, either. Talk about another money-pit hobby.

I haven't logged in for a long time. My bike is so damn close to being on the road and I haven't even looked at it in months. :(

I need to go finish it. I really wish my paint would have worked out. The midnight purple I had done looked so great in pictures. Too bad that ended up being an expensive disaster. I don't know that I'll ever have the guts to go after a new paint job again. :(

I'm going to try to convince myself to finish this soon. We're dumping the Mikuni and going back to amals. It's really close though.

Holy hell, it's been a long time..

Ignore the oil on the cardboard...that was from the center stand when the oil bag leaked into it (I sent it to CNW to be repaired).
If you want correct combustion and better performance, the Amals are better than the Mikuni. My Mikuni bolted right on but runs rich with black plugs. It is heaven to start and no gas smell on your fingers EVER but then you must remember it is only one carb and your performance will be less. Depends what you want.

Why would you not jet it correctly??

I can have a look inside now because winter is around the corner and the Amals are going back on for next season. I did lower the needle a notch but doesn't seem to be any leaner, so far. Maybe smaller idle jet?

Whoops, Rohan, I thought you were asking about the oil.

We don't like the Mikuni. Dad isn't good at tuning it (he KNOWS how to tune the amals) and it sounds awful. Plus I had a brand new set of amals I got with the bike.
The only real difference is probably the needle jets and needles. With any of them, getting that right is usually the major problem. But brand news carbs are good.

If you lower the needles far enough, you should be able to force the motor to cough. Then raise them one notch. If you cannot force the cough, fit a smaller needle jet. You should be able to tell when you are too lean. But too rich is very difficult to detect because the motor just becomes a bit slower. I would always use the largest specified main jets, then you won't burn anything inside the top end of the motor. Idle jets should not be your problem, unless they are blocked.

Be careful.
Pinball leads to stamp collecting.
Gateway hobby.

Double up on your internal combustion dosages.

Thanks for the tips. I can easily have a look at the Mikuni now that the snow started just today. I did check the pilot jet is a 35 and the carb itself is a 34mm. Going to move the needle down as low as it will go next time and see if that works.

If you think the machine is running rich with the Mikuni, then start changing the jet(s) that is/are blackening your plugs.

To your
it is only one carb and your performance will be less. Depends what you want.

A single 34mm Mikuni VM has significantly less cross sectional area than 2, 30mm Amals, no surprises, so, yes, less fuel burns (especially if calibrated properly) so less power is produced.

Best.

I have lowered the needle to the lowest postion but I am planning to put the Amals back on for next season. I have shifted my priority to installing an in line oil filter as I went to change oil and discovered quite a mess in the bottom of the oil tank. :-O.
