Guys,

We finally got around to installing the new Heinz Kegler kit on my commando and I'm a bit concerned about the oil line routing.... I installed the kit with the clamps (per the instruction) at a half inch from the side of the swing arm mount but when we put the bike back together, the oil return line going to the oil filter is now pushing against the Heinz Kegler clamp. Since it's pushing against the clamp, it has slightly squeezed the oil line. This concerns me a bit. Is there a work around? Maybe some sort of oil line that is resistant to being squished? Re-routing the line?

You can see from the pic that the oil line is right up against the clamp.

Hehe welcome to good ideas clashing with factory routing. Great photo efforts to get that shot btw. I looked at my Combat to see I mounted the collars as far apart as could [for leverage on spindle wobbe] which lets half the hose miss it but still most the hose diameter pressed on collar so I routed the metal coil fastory hose armor to bare on the collar as it passed to oil flilter. The other hose is naked and passes up center area w/o too musch bend into stuff. and so far 10,000 miles seems fine. Its painful knuckling to route with the armor but relieves ones mind on the fly. I've found plain blued finished collars rusted after a while so cleaned up sprayed black and just now saw no rust. Mine get grit blast splashed. If there is anywhere on a Commando a torque wrench is worth it, the collars are it to me. Unless your spindle was so loose you got a twitch of slack smack on direction changes then likely will not feel a thing different till the ease to service spinde occurs.

Hi,

installed the Kegler solution at mine recently, too. It touched the oil line, but it was not such tight, that it got squeezed. After filing the edge a bit it don't touches the hose anymore.
But touching a bit should not be a problem, because at these parts is no movement.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will pop the back side of the clamp off and grind the crap out of it to allow for more room. Hobot, I will also try to put some sort of protective spring/sleeve over the line too. Anyone know of a spring/sleeve that can be sourced locally in the USA at a national autoparts store that will work?

Hi,

the spring is an genuine AN part. I mounted the spring because the sharp edge of the horn touches the hose.

You could always wrap it it with something to protect the line if you are concerned about wear. Stainless steel covered oil lines are available.

I suffered to try to keep my Trixie true to the good book parts numbers so as already stated I used the factory metal shields that are way more like hardware stiff bendable electrical conduit than spring. Only thing springy is the spiral of metal and fight back to make em bend + sharp ends. I would not use SS braid in such tight quarters and just the bounce and vibration saws notches pretty soon and end a blood mess to handle. I did Peel in SS and looking up her skirt to see them is one my lasting impressions but next Peel is going with soft fabric braided lines cheap - easy to replace and much more interesting less flashy more business like to stare at. No one but you would see SS down there anyway and better get clear coated sealed one or picks up road stain and holds it like nothing else.
One of the most trick little features on Nortons is the dam tough Herringbone hose so that's what Trixie has. Hmm, maybe next Peel too to help fool strangers/
