I have the 2 rubber rings on the bottom yoke and a single one on the top. I am sure both yoke bearings are fully home, yet there is still about 5mm space on the headlight bracket. Is there some other mounting system using larger rubber grommets of some sort? I can't imagine a previous owner shortened the brackets, but can someone pls tell me the length of the brackets, and the distance between the yokes (MKIII yoke and frame)?

If using all the right parts, and the bearings are touching the spacer tube then there won't be a gap. Also, the fork ear you have installed is upside down which has nothing to do with your problem. Most likely, you don't have the bottom yoke up against the bearing or you don't have the washer (06.7685) and head lug dust cover (06-7651) down against the top bearing.

When installing, both fork ears must be in place and the headlight shell secured between them because once everything is tightened, the fork ears will not move and if you force them you will destroy the O-rings.

As @L.A.B says that top yoke does not look right - more pictures would help.

The top yoke is stamped 064084 and ANG. Bottom yoke is 064083 ANG. I thought the ANG makes them MKIII.
The bracket only measures 180mm so I am missing 8mm. Strange.

No, all 850 are ANG.
The Mk3 upper yoke should have two threaded bosses for the console and brake line bracket.

The Mk3 top yoke is ANG 065721. This is the casting number not the part number.

The upper tube (on the right) should measure 42mm from the plate, yours does not seem to be.

OK, all clear now, except the reason for the missing 8mm. The yoke I have is fine then as I don't have a MK3 motor, only the frame is MKIII.

Ordering new brackets now.

Thanks

Your head steady in the first pic is the weak 750 version prone to cracking, the 850 version was a boxed in design that did not crack. But you could equally upgrade to the heim joint Taylor or other versions which help further with the handling. You will need to check the top yoke and its steering lock engages properly as the MK3 frame has a different tab on the front of the steering stem for the steering lock.

Yeah, my head steady was discussed in a thread a couple of days ago. I plan on upgrading it.
Not really planning on fitting a steering lock but will bear this in mind.

Apologies, I missed that. I have just zoomed in on the original photo and you can see where the top has been poorly cut.
