Yes, same thing occurs to me if I ever get too broken up to
operate my special as no way would anyone pay half of
whats spent on dream machines unless its their very own.
I can no longer even mention or think of cycles over 250cc
as an economy hobby to wife, just admit its pure luxury before we die.
I want to track test Ms Peel tri rod handling against mono shocks
bikes, both antique Commandos to newest moderns,
to settle the pecking order of suspension-chassis set up.
Don't think they stand a chance going by my past under powered
750 insane contests, but ain't come up against a hot rod mono
Commando, so may be surprised - and glad of it.

For what you are getting the price its ridiculously cheap and affordable.
3 months ago when I was acquiring my Commando, I didn't think I was gonna sink that much dough into it, but like I realize now and have read in other posts, $1000's of dollars goes by pretty quick and throw in all those nights in the garage etc etc.
If I knew the total cost of what I've spent on my hot rod commando then, and GPaul was offering his hot rod up for $9500, I woulda jumped on it. All cafe'd out and built for speed, man wow what a deal. Try to build one like that!!! Never Mind the Know How and those Bollocks (S. Pistols).

You should be able to strip a complete engine in a day or two. Then clean (if you count cleaning hours) and reassemble. How many billable hours would that be? 30? 40?
Keep in mind that Paul may farm out some tasks that you do yourself. Also he may not count every minute on every project.

You are SO right, I don't know how to rebuild an engine.
AND mine was JUST a Cosmetic Update, replacing ancillary bits here and there.
Thank god. Couple of minor setbacks kept me in garage for far too long.
Heck, the guys thought I gave up surfing. I was possessed by the Norton.
Engine ran good, but bike looked like crap.
The look was a half hearted older cafe treatment from the 90's, just wasn't up to snuff.
Some things were broken. Some things I broke. Hahaha.
Then the electical fire, a good 10 days of waiting for the harness, and headscratchingly putting it in and making it work.
On top of that, the tank puzzlement.
The original Fiberglass one seemed ok but everyone warns stay away from em or redo the whole seal em thing again in 2 years.
So buy a pakistan tank and its not quite up to the requirements, so obtain an OEM Norton steel tank and have that painted etc etc.
3 months can go by pretty quick. With the wife tapping her toe at the garage door while I'm cussing over a dropped bolt or washer (fumble fingers).
You get the picture.
Right now I'm stoked with my project.
It has my stamp of approval and lots of the boys here have given me kudos.
So that part feels great. The reaction locally from guys with older bikes, they know what they're looking at so it my effort goes appreciated.
But buying a done bike or almost done bike sure looks good to me now.
I don't think I would take that approach again.
Only thing is.......my limit may be maxed out now.
3 bikes max says wifey.
But I suppose all you guys with more than that were once a 3 bike man too? hahah LOL!

on grandPaul's outrageous world class special as great discounted
bargain basement price.
You've got a mystery engine and gearbox innards condition
to trust for long distance journey or hi energy shorter joy rides.
Be very restless at this opportunity and consider how you'll
reflex on my post after a few more $1000's put in for peace of
pilot desires, if not rest of family.

The point is that different people can take different amounts of time to accomplish something. If you've mounted many of Dyna coils or wired many bikes I'd expect you to be faster than someone who has never done it. Or rebuilt more than a few engines. :roll:

My build has taken 3 years start to finish for a ground up rebuild. It all comes down to time and money, more importantly MONEY. I progress on my bike as cash allows it and it sucks up a lot of cash since I'm doing a special with lots of custom this and that. That and I have a new house I've been doing renos on over the past two years and that takes a lot of time and money as well. If I made more than $35,000 CDN a year (which I don't), that bike would have been done a long time ago, as would my house. I'd rather buy bike parts than windows or a furnace but alas the house comes first. The $5000 I just spent on a new furnace would have paid to finish my Triumph chopper that I'm also working on between renos and the Commando.
Now, If I actually had the right carb sent to me the FIRST time, and not having the wrong throttle cable sent to me twice I'd be riding the MKIII. My MKII is now done actually, it has been for 3 weeks. I'm just still waiting for the correct throttle cables to show up.
My point is, I took my time to make sure things were done right the first time hence my comment on doing things right taking time and patience. I was'nt starting a pissing contest on who can finish a bike restoration or custom the quickest, I was commenting on doing things right, that's all.
Now hurry up and finish that production racer!
