My daughter’s lab Pedro - our grand dog - lost his battle with cancer this morning and has gone to join his buddy , my beloved Brittany Nugget in dog heaven. I’m sure Nugget was waiting at the gate to greet him .
He had a long and happy life , just shy of 15 years so hard to ask for more than that.
RIP Pedro.

Very sad
But I bet they had great lives
And that's the only consolation and they'd tell you that if they could

Sorry for your loss Rich, they do become part of the family.
 
When Bozzwell, the last of my Labs, was gone I wanted to rush out and get another. I had Labs or Lab mixes for 40 years, but I couldnt bring myself to do it. It felt like a betrayal to their memories to think they could be replaced so quickly. Now I live somewhere where having a dog would be hard so I get my dog fix where I can. Friends dogs, ones I meet at the local brewpub. Even just to say hello to dogs in the car next to me in a parking lot. I guess the next best thing is to volenteer at the local shelter but Im afraid Ill come home with a new best friend.9
 
When my last German Shepherd had to be put down, I didn´t want another one. She was as perfect as a dog could be. So I thought it should be unfair to compare a puppy to her.
Now wife has an old Cocker Spaniel she got from an old lady who could not care for it any more.
 
Thanks everyone for the kind words - very much appreciated. My daughter is ,of course, heartbroken and my 3 year old granddaughter doesn’t understand where Pedro is but perhaps that’s a good thing.
Unfortunately learning to deal with loss is part of life . As I said , Pedro had long and healthy life in a wonderful home .
