It's been awhile since i've posted here.
Getting close to starting up the 73 ( has 71 engine ) commando .
No new paint etc.. This is going to be a rider as is . Engine has been gone through zero miles. Still need to set up wiring , exhaust , etc...
About one days work left lol...
then on to the combat cafe oil in frame as in the pic. This one will have drum front and rear .
It will use the 73 engine and finally won a couple heads to choose from . One has a C mark on the front .
Other I will find out more when it arrives.
I figure they will need to have some fins repaired . guides etc.
By the way best place to send a head for repair / rebuild ( I'am here in the states )

Interesting, my next build will also have oil in frame and drums front and rear, is there a trend somewhere :wink:

Kenny Dreer has been converting all of the oil-in-frime bikes he built BACK TO OIL TANKS.

Great idea in concept, not so much in practice.
 
That's funny because Matt is building new frames with oil in frame, Maybe converting the original frames was not good? :?:
 
It's amusing the trendiness. From '73 through at least the end of the 80s disc front ends were golden and you couldn't give away a TLS front brake. Now the TLS is platinum. :)

Converting original frames is really bad. There is no way you can know what's in there. With the Commando frame you know the top tube terminates at the front and back but man, you want that spotless and nothing that can come loose. I'd run filters and screens and both ends of the feeds.

So is a Grimeca "diamond" :?: (that is what I'm putting on the front)

As for using the frame for oil, there must be ways of cleaning the insides before using it on the street. Maybe Kenny Dreer is converting back to oil tanks because there is not enough oil in the top tube alone. My plan is to hack the stock frame and add some capacity to the top tube.

I'm not so sure as to any or all of the drawbacks on the OEM frame tube, but it MIGHT also have something to do with starvation of the main feed under heavy braking...

That sounds... bad. Not like you can easily put baffles in there.

as grandpaul says it is more a style gimmick than a practical solution Because of my exhausts running through the frame i had no option as to use the frame as oiltank but this means difficulty in checking oil-return , oil-level ,oil change etc .
Still is funny as people keep looking where the oiltank is ; Baffeling is no problem once you have cut out the back of the spine and the through-tube ;What tube ? Cut out the back and you can see for yourself . Will post some pics when can figure out how to do it again ...... useless with pc,s
ps the space-frame sold at laurent did NOT have the original engine in any more That was blown up by some-one who used it for a while (Tonio M.....)but put a rod through the cases The original was then replaced but with a similar modified timing cover

From what I read on the french forums, using only the main beam is not enough even filled to the brim (~ 2 liters) because some room must be allowed for the breather to pump back into the tank. The Triumph/BSA oil in frame bikes did not hold a lot of oil, but they had a lot of free room above the oil level for the breathers to pump into (BSA?? I think Triumphs just breathed outside).

thanks for putting in these pics Jean . As you can see I do not like PCs because I am useless with them
My set-up uses 2.2 l of oil with enough airspace above
the main spine is baffeled(i hope one can read my english)
