Hi,
Having shifting issues. Looking at the Ratchet Plate Assembly there are 6 teeth that the pawl can engage with. In situ three below the pin that engages with the quadrant and three above the pin. Can anyone identify which tooth is associated with which gear while shifting? I can catch neutral and shift into 1st but shifting into 2nd there’s nothing but air. The pawl seemingly isn’t engaging with anything. I have the pawl spring gapped correctly. I have the outer cover off and want to position the ratchet assembly in such a way that it replicates neutral and then go from there shifting to maybe see what’s going on. Thanks

Have you read this? It's in Resources above. Old Britts - Commando Gearbox -- How does it work
If not, just do a search on that title and download.
Cheers

Been there, but 3rd and 4th were difficult or impossible to get. I think (in my case) the P11 gearbox doesn't like the layshaft shimmed tighter than sloppy, and I might have a tight bushing on the mainshaft. I may have bent the mainshaft a little torquing down the clutch excessively. Oops

I got so tired of taking that outside cover off and messing with that AMC box, I bought an overpriced TTi gearbox. Works great, but it's yet another race part I probably could have done without. At the time I could have bought a new Commando gearbox and put the guts in my P11 AMC box for half the price.

The guts in your gearbox and the P11 gearbox should be the same. Only difference is the P11 gearbox might be wider at the mounts.

I believe there is a link to the Old Brits technical articles in the Technical Information section top of the Commando forum list.

Well voila everything is now working. Loosened up the pawl spring a bit and gave either side of the pawl about .008 clearance to the spring. I also noticed too much slop in the kickstart shaft so I removed the inner cover and added .020 of shims which when assembled gave me .005 of end play.

On the front porch getting the Norton oil tight!

Well done. It's a beauty.

Good for you on the gearbox.
