I am finally finishing my gearbox rebuild after way too long. I am just about to fit the outer cover but it is quite tight changing gear. I have been using a large screwdriver to cycle thru the gears levering against the slot in the case where the knuckle roller and lever come thru. The gearbox is dry but it indicates it is tight on the selectors and new bushes I have fitted. I think it will be OK when I have oil in it and the leverage of the gear lever and a spinning mainshaft (on tick over). Any guidance would be appreciated.

Fit cover put oil in and slosh it around then try the change with gear lever.
Remember you change with your foot which is normally not the same sensitivity as your hand and using the lever not a screw driver makes a big difference.

It should be OK when it has the proper set up, using a screw driver will always feel tight.

Agree with the above, as long as the new bushes were a good sliding fit on assembly, no parts were bent or worn, and all parts are in correctly, then you should be fine once the bike is up and running, I have just rebuilt my gearbox and its much the same as youres, bit stiff to cycle through gears using a large screwdriver on the quadrant, bit easier with plenty of oil in the box, which I used for assembly, of course turn the main shaft and sleeve gear whilst changing gear.

I first re built the box about 25 years ago, was the same then!, worked lovely once on the road, gearbox is currently held in the vice, I did fit the gear-change lever, and can get all the gears, but it does need a bit of a push with the hand, as toppy said, quite different feeling through the foot.
