Gearbox Layshaft Issue?

Easy everybody. I have a day job but will address the belt tension and see where we shake out. Still not clear that is the cause, but it does appear to be too loose.

Orthopedic Surgeon’s dream of this stuff.
I was having a cast reset on my leg in the 70's, the Ortho had an Intern there and comments,
you'll learn to love these motorcycle riders / snow skiers, they'll put all your kids through college.......

Stripping the clutch was a waste of time. There’s nothing in there that can be causing this.

As concours has said, I believe the ‘locking up’ as you put it is simply compression.

I believe the ‘kick back without ign’ is the slop in the belt. As already established, it is way too slack.

And I believe the ‘clicking noise’ is your clutch basket rotating very slightly counter clockwise after you realise the pressure off of the kickstart as can be seen in the second of the first batch of videos you uploaded. This is the only ‘mystery’ to me, personally I don’t know what that is, or whether or not it’s even normal.

Concours also has a point about your technique, you are trying to ‘kick’ it, but really you should be aiming for a long, follow-through ‘swing’ on the starter. It ought to be called a swing starter really !
OP posted: “I can put my full 170 lbs on top of the starter and it will push through but eventually stick in place, gradually easing after a few seconds and pushing through.“

Any update @nomadwarmachine ?

Kicker is up too high ? 45 degree angle seems best ?
No, I was commenting on the right-over-left method, severe lateral loading of the knee joint, and if a kick back occurred, I see damage. The ability to get the crank turning fast enough to plow through the stoutest compression, by being straight on top of it.

OOOH.
Never seen a kicker at rest straight up to the stars.

The RGM belt tension instructions are a bit contradictory I find but it recommends to check when hot as stated here earlier. The belt does tighten when hot so seemingly needs to be pretty slack when cold. Not convinced anyone really knows what's right
I'd mark the belt and pulley and kick it.

You prob never ridden a Commando with rear-sets then I guess?
True. I bought a set in the 80's . Drove for one day and did not fit my body style. I have scoliosis so must sit up higher and straighter. My friend Doug Hunter in Ottawa-Manotick Ont. Can. took them away for $50 and I was glad to go back to stock setup. I'm small and he is big.

kicker has to point up to aviod getting in the way of the shin etc. And the length is helpful with starting.
Wasn’t my invention, PRs had extended and ‘straight up’ kickers from the factory.

Just came from the garage on an otherwise busy work day, but I wanted to provide an update. Spent a couple of hours yesterday getting everything buttoned up with the two gearbox adjusters aligning the clutch & setting belt to allow about 60 degrees rotation at the belt's midpoint. Also retarded the ignition a few degrees on the Pazon (not many) as Htown16 suggested.

Bike started right up (even with my dancing shoes!). No locking/kicking. Looks like the issue was belt tension. Will get a video up soon.

I expect that I need to advance the timing a little, as it is running rough but that is not surprising. THANK YOU ALL!!!!
