If it is the rubber seal then the old one should just pull out.

i see by the picture it has a philips screw securing the disc to the cap mine has a post through the middle wth a washer and the post is mushroomed over retaining the disc from slipping off..

I just changed mine a few weeks ago and started having intermittent fuel starving issues. Compared to the old seal the new seal made a complete seal. The vent hole was blocked up but because the seal was not working, I did not have a problem before. The new seal is just fitted around the retaining piece. Mine folded out a bit until I snapped it shut for the night. Then it held its form.

The philips screw in the picture may be from prior owner drilling out the
rivet to replace with sheet metal screw w/o knowing how easy to just slip old out and new in. You'd think a simple ole gas cap would be a simple open close case to deal with, but not on Nortons with at least half dozen issues to attend to. BTW Wes's HiRyder cap hinges on the front side while my Roadster and IS tank hinge from the rear.

thanks for the advice,so you think i should swap out the rubber only and not the whole disc assembly?

Ok LAB thanx for more interesting if useless trivia I love to be set straight on.

I can't agree that this is useless trivia.

Any original cross-head screw on a British bike is likely to be Pozi, not Phillips so a Pozi screwdriver should be used in preference to Phillips wherever possible.

Its just trivia to me LAB, not because of anything associated with your filling us in, just mine are all riveted and don't have the special driver so would have to make do with a Philips and suspect a lot of others would too, that are not so well informed or equipped as you.

Well informed...possibly, and reasonably well equipped  with the right tools for the job  , as Pozi fasteners are common in the UK/Europe so a selection of Pozi drivers in the average tool kit over here isn't unusual, but I have absolutely no doubt you will continue to use a Phillips screwdriver regardless (pointy end to the screw, remember).

I have some of those posidrive bits and they really get messed up when you use them on a Phillips, or vice versa. I find them a pain, but when you need one you need one.

I replaced mine with a Phillips after I tapped it out.

Dang nailed me to my mechanic's shade tree but so far I've only encountered regular Philips on my bikes so yes your wisdom is over my head again.

Absolutely, you have to use the correct driver for the screw or you'll just mangle things.

Now just to be different, I just replaced the seal AND the plate on mine. It was the rivetted type, so after grinding the swage off I drilled and tapped it and put it back together with a socket drive cap screw. So there!

Cheers

L.A.B.,
Do you happen to know the common size of Pozidriver bits/drivers found on our bikes? I have only seen these at britishtoolsonline but they couldn't really say what was the usual size(s) when I had asked.
