G'day team ! Here is a question to my aussie brothers nd sisters . What is your fuel of choice for road going machine ? I've recently got the combat back on the road after a 20 year nap . A Rip Van Winkle nap for bikes . I'm currently wrestling , well the Amals are , with BP 98 and a few drops of additive in the interstate tank . Is BP the go to fuel or is Caltex Vortex some thing better or is down to choice ?

Just run 98 it don't matter who produces it as long as your bike runs well with it, no need to run lead replacement additive in every tank of fuel as the Norton valves handle unleaded fuel pretty good and if you do run additive make sure you use only the right amount.

Good on you , Ashley ! Ta very much .

I dunno if the octane ratings are the same in OZ as they are here in the US, but the highest octane available here at the pumps is rated 93. My buddy uses it on his 72 Combat, and anything less will make the motor ping. I also use 93 in my supercharged Buick with no issues.

The fuels today are just not the same as when we had lead in our fuels, in OZ we usually have 3 octane levels in our pumps 91 low octane or E10 95 is mid octane and 98 is our highest at about 10 cents more a ltr but has more additives added to make your motor run cleaner, we rate our fuels differently to the US of A, so 95 or 98 is best for our bikes any lower and the dreaded pinging, but I run 98 in my Norton , my 850 has a hot motor lots of work but I still run stock valves in the head.

I dont know about Oz, but BP here in NZ has always been crap for my bike.

I would run 95 if you have a standard compression motor. I find Z (Shell) is better than either BP/Caltex and my 9.5:1 motor with a hotter than normal cam and lots of head work runs great on 95.

All my old bombs run fine on 95 however for a few extra cents I usually go 98 and then if I need to nick some for the modern rocket I can.

For years i ran my bike mostly on regular (91). It was only relatively recently that i found a heavily planed head (10:1 plus comp ratio) and a very lump cam.
Ignorance is bliss as they say, but i never noticed any fuel related problems.

A lumpy cam will live more easily on fuel available because of the overlap I presume. I was regularly using 91 and I ran firstly a PW3 and then a Webcam 312b with no issues and no pinking.
