could somebody please give me the centres and the diameter of the pegs for the tool needed to remove the blanking plug on a standard commando brake calliper i dont have the calliper in front of me to measure cheers baz

Just happen to be fiddling with some calipers:

Holes are 0.25 inch (1/4" drill bit fits nicely)
Centers of holes apart 0.80 inch

I'd put in two sets for ludwig like mass loss and extra holes if hobot like torque if needed.

you will get yourself in trouble again suggesting drilling holes in old Nortons!

I also measured the hole depth at 0.22 inches. A bit tricky because the hole bottoms are slightly countersunk.

I suggest heating the caliper in hot water for a while before trying to open if really stuck.
The alloy will expand more than the steel plug.

Good luck. Yep, you could probably get some interest from folks needed to acquire a robust tool.

I took it up to 300F with the heat gun... plug came out well.

I made my tool out of 1/2" steel plate using 1/4" hardened steel pins from McMaster Carr. I welded an old socket on it and used an impact wrench on it cold while still on the bike. They spun right off.

the tool steadfast have works very well ,the hex head allows you to fit a 1/2 drive socket with a T bar to the extractor so lots of purchase

Heat the caliper with a blow torch to expand the alloy and even the most cruddy ones let go

$ 36.00 OUCH !!!! The price seams a little steep they normally retail in the UK for around $20.00

I won't pay for a tool that's so simple to make and I didn't have time to wait either cheers baz.

I think Steve was implying that you'll need two sets of holes in the tool. Not a bad idea either way, as the holes in the tool can get woggled-out from repeated use.

I stuck two drill bits through one of those bike tool kit spark plug thingies you used to get on Japanese bikes - any bit of pipe would do as well - and used a screwdriver as a lever to turn the bits. Worked a treat, no cost and no fabrication.

Got the idea from one of our own in another thread here.
