using valvoline vr1 racing 50 wt.

I think you should have used a non-detergent motor oil, such as Shell Aero 100 Ashless Dispersant Aviation oil. Something about friction modifiers in normal detergent oils, like the Valvoline, which delay bedding in of the rings. It probably doesn't matter now, but next time break in with non-detergent.

Even new bikes use a different oil for the first 500 miles for break-in purposes.

Like Bill says, don't redline it, but take it out and run through the gears with a couple of good, hard pulls. I wouldn't rev it over 5000-5500, but you need to load the engine to get those rings to seat.

As bill says, it takes heat and pressure to bed in new rings. I was told always to run in new bikes by keeping the revs varying but never exceeding 80%. I have used that method in more than 20 motors in Motocross bikes, Road race two strokes and four strokes, Volkswagen race motors (Formula Vee), two new cars and my current Norton with no problems. As far as oil goes, I have never worried about whether it is detergent or non-detergent. The cheapest mineral oil you can get of the right grade is all that you need, preferably one of the older grades such as SG etc. Best is probably a running in oil such as Penrite makes.

If you don't run a oilfilter use non detergent oil, detergent oils will start to break up sludge and other nasties,a lower grade 30w is about right for running in, don't let the bike idle for long periods,go out and ride it hard, use the gearbox so you are not chugging out of corners, accelerate hard then backoff, that will force the rings out against the bores and as you back off that should suck some oil up to cool them back so they don't burn and glaze, don't hold it at sustained high revs with out letting it have that cool down. Chrome rings might take 1500km to bed in properly, plain castiron should be 1/2 that, but they shouldn't be real smokey during run in,mabey the odd puff every now and then. With lots of oil leaks I would start look looking for a breathing problem.
