Hi, does anybody know, would a jb weld repair on a small pit in the fork leg satisfy the M.O.T. in the UK?
I can always do the repair and then stick gaiters on, I've had so many poorly chromed/ground fork legs that I've come to the decision to get an old pair ground and hard chromed, any recommendations for this service in the UK? what finished o.d. should I be asking for, or would it be better to send new top bushes and seals along with them. cheers Paul.

The tester will be more concerned about whether the fork seals are leaking.

Light misting causing a thin film of fluid on a suspension damper is not a reason for rejection.

Pitting of a fork stanchion is not a reason for rejection unless damage to damper seals has occurred. It may be necessary to pull back any rubber gaiters to conduct this examination if it is possible without dismantling or damage but they must be correctly refitted.

I used to get my old fork tubes hard chromed, and at the time it cost about the same as new forks tubes. I recently inquired about getting a set of tubes hard chromed, and the cost was about double that of new tubes. I will be buying new tubes in future.

If I'd paid twice the cost of new ones in the beginning I'd have saved a lot of money by now :( , I've had tubes from the owners club, RGM, A.N. and they've all pitted in short time ie. a couple of riding seasons, the late great John Robert Bould was well aware of the problem and told me he used tubes from a firm called Vellocette, not the motorcycle firm, I bought these on good advice and yes they have lasted the longest (since the originals), but are now starting to develop a couple of tiny pit holes in one fork leg. The problem seems to be that they are never finally ground to a smooth enough finish, the ones from the owners club were almost as corse as one of my round files in my toolbox! They seem to have a more satin or dull look to them when I hold them up to my Jap bikes in the garage, which are exposed to the exact same treatment and abuse as the Commando but don't give issue with the forks. Good luck buying new, but I feel I've learned the hard way, I do like the look of D.L.C.!

I've bought numerous fork tubes over the years from different suppliers genuine and non genuine and have never had the same experience that you have had. I've never seen a poor finish on new tubes. I think you will find the cost of DLC for your fork tubes will be very cost prohibitive. To DLC a piston pin will likely cost a minimum of $40-$50

I fit long gaiters internally greased and do not have pitting, they do wear on the side especially on the disc leg from the bending but only after some years. Second job after junking the TT100's for Roadrunners was to fit long gaiters instead of the standard short ones which just collect dirt and rub it into the stanchions.

Vellocette forks are not as good as the AN ones, not my words, but from the company that grinds and hard chromes them for both. Hard chroming is expensive, and pitting removal by this method is not ideal as it compromises the tube. Thick hard chroming, can be polished better to a smoother finish than thin coating, but will hold less oil as the surface has less micro-cracking than a thin layer.

As LAB says, it is not an MOT faliure, providing the seals do not leak and the pitting is an area, and not severe enough to damage the seal.

It probably costs $40-$50 just to handle a part.

The mail order repairs listed above and below has pricing and it seems like the hard chrome service may be on par with the DLC service. The question is as the OP asked, what is the finished OD. Other questions include what substrate can they apply the DLC on.

From what I have read you may even gain greater resistance to pitting. A fellow I had raced with in the past had a very trick and fast BSA twin with the TiN treated front forks. He was a talented machinist in a region where there is a big aerospace presence - lots of knowledge and specialty services.

It costs little to nothing to email or call and then weigh out the options.

thanks for that link, minimum GBP100 per leg for DLC so you would want to supply new tubes so you would be looking at a minimum of
$350 for DLC for a pair of tubes. As long as you didnt damage them they would probably last forever.

Some reading indicates that one may not be able to apply a DLC on chrome.

Best to call or email with the questions. Can you get fork tubes machined and polished and not chromed? The DLC is only a few microns in thickness

Just measure a good unworn section of your current fork tubes, and go with that ?

I've had some fork tubes that wouldn't even go through a (well used) set of yokes without some persuading,
they were used too, so they seem to vary a bit !!

Cost of re-hard chroming a pair of stanchions in the UK is usually £120.-180, if there is s set in them, then this will increase or not make it possible.

Be careful, the tubes need to be HARD chromed, if the chrome is just a few microns thick this is only chrome plating :(

Well at this stage I've had no reply from the business suggested, no reply often means one of a few things, they couldnt be bothered replying, they are out of business, they are so busy with customers orders that they cant get to a computer or?????

I have fitted Emgo Tubes to both Dominators and Commandos both still going strong after 5 years of abuse

£120 to £180 to chrome old tubes ? new EMGO approx £60.00 per pair
