Hi Guys,

I'm about to re-assemble the forks on my Commando (Nice new shiny fork tubes), was wondering if any of you have any tips, or tricks for getting the bronze bushes in?

Cheers,

Steve

Not sure if this still applies to the bronze bushes, or if all bushes are the same these days, but once it was mandatory to soak the bushes overnight in fork oil.

Reason being, the bushes were sintered bronze (melted metal powder), and porous, and soaking them allowed the oil to reach everywhere inside, storage / lubrication for future use.

This also applies to sintered gearbox bearings - not sure if they are available these days or not either ?

Hope this helps.

Once fitted a few raps with a hide mallet will settle them, its common Engineering pratice... Hold the slider in one hand and gently tap the stanchion .turning it as you do, the molded bush's will form to the required alignments...

I usually warm up the sliders with a hot air gun and the bushes go in pretty easy, push them in the last bit by screwing in the retaining nut.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the tips! I put the sliders in the works ultrasonic cleaner last week, got all the crud out of them. I also had the fork seal kit turn up on Friday, so (Since I'm on a Commando rebuild vacation), I'll re-assemble them today. :)

Cheers!

A thick wall tube ,36 bore x 40 od about 200 mm long makes a great slide hammer [turned up true on the end,,] plus the bush is kept nice and square.
Avoid hitting just the edge,,oilite bush's are quite weak. plus make fitting the seal easy as well :!:
