Obviously a southerner....Memorial Day and the garden is about done! Let me know how the tomato plants go what the blight and all.
I might add that you should have spaced all the plants out more.

They'll throw in you in jail for that Confederate flag. LOL Ain't it a shame what we're turning into! Garden looks great again we might need it!

Good on you Alan ! We been growing our food for more than 40 yrs now , stuff looks no better than your first ! …. We have some seeds in now and in coming wk will have it all in , you way ahead of us up here , usually have killing frost in June around full moon , it so late in month , we betting not happening this year …. enjoy communing with nature in your own backyard …. Good for your soul

craigs it's very relaxing! as i said this is my first one so i learned a lot...next one will be more spaced out county agent told me that powdered milk sprinkled at base of plants will help with blossom end rot on squash and tomatoes and cukes (extra calcium) as for the flag it's just a little one! the plants got much bigger than i expected garden area is near septic tank drain field so plenty of extra nutrients and Vitamin P....... Onder- i am NC Tar Heel southern through and through

Nothing better than eating your first ever crop, it will always be a learning curve and you will slowly find out what grows best, I been growing veg up my back yard for years in my younger days till I built my big shed up the back over 30 years ago now and lost my garden area, but the last few years have got back into it and down the front I am growing roses and anything that looks pretty, but what small back yard I have is full of garden beds, home made compost in a old bath tub and a at the back of my shed, its our winter now so things have slowed down but still getting fresh passion fruit of the vine, the tomato's are starting to produce and the sweet potato will be a little longer before they are ready, the herb garden is doing well.
Just finished feeding the garden with fresh compost and mulch to help it through the winter and will do some pruning in the next month the roses will be cut right back but they are having a late run of roses at the moment and the vine on my front patio is starting to flower, love a lot of colour in my gardens and grow sweet basil all around the gardens front and back for the native bees to do their thing.
But the best thing about any gardening is it keeps you active and stress free.

Ash , only stress free if you have no deer , the white tails trash just bout anything that grows here … I have 5 strand elec. fence around the food garden … the flowers , shrubs and trees are all open except grape vine , 2 chestnut trees and a azalea that I’m moving into fenced area … our council is hopeless , in last 15 yrs their only statement has been “ please don’t feed the deer” that like saying only use rock for landscaping ….

I live on a small suburban block on the North side of Brisbane, yard fully fence, but it surprises me how much I can grow, my back yard is taken up by 1/2 with the shed/workshop (bikes only as can't get a car up the back) I have a open covered area off the front of my shed and have 2 flowering vines and the passion fruit growing along the front of the open covered area.

garden growers and fast bike owners/riders/mechanics sounds like renaissance men to me!

Its a healthy life style and wouldn't have it any other way :)

Been growing sweet flavoured strawberries in big pots for a while, but have to keep them under bird netting as those sweet beaked thush/blackbirds gobble them as their 5 a day diet!

Speaking of the Cloven Hoof Disease Vectors, don't neglect the real terror of the garden: Mr. Woodchuck. If you fence for him you have to bury the fence down at least 2-3 feet the dig their way under. Rabbits much easier to fence out.
Best fence is, of course, a good accurate .22. You can drop anything including a deer with it.

I’m armed but value my guns too much to give them away to the law for discharging in town limits …. we have a murder of crows that were here before us , they take care of all rodents included ground hogs, woodchucks etc. …..

Gardening is a big part of my day. I look at the garden several times daily. It is like therapeutic zen, observing growth of the plants and savoring the freshness of what (hopefully) is to come. My garden is halfway between the house and the shop where I am working on the 72 which makes it perfect location to think thinks over there and back. Grapes, red cabbage, tomatoes, basil, peppers, asparagus and of course hops, where the stumps and bar are. I call it the beer garden.

BERT,
How do you keep the deer out of there...or do they end up in you freezer? ;)
I have to enclose and then net my wifes garden to try and keep out the squirrels, birds, raccoons, deer etc.
She has blackberry, strawberry and raspberry plants along with the vegetable plants and if not covered, the birds especially, along with the rest of the critters will devour any and all attempts at growing food for the table.

Get some chicken n waffles from Nellies to go with those fresh vegetables and you got a winner dinner!
