At long last, I have sourced a slimline featherbed frame ($400!) and I intend to shove the #16 Commando motor into it.

God only knows when I'll get to the project, but..I've got some pieces to work with now. Planning on using the TLS front end from the '70 Roadster I'm parting out, and maybe the rear wheel too..

Alrighty, even women don't make me go Weeee!!! that much any more or take so long to scan over details. Will be fun to follow along as rocking chair mechanic.

OH Man and a cheap date to boot!! Wait till you have to get her expensive stuff and rings installed before she'll put out.

LOL. This is what my dad wanted for #16--a featherbed frame, a hardtail, or a plunger. I opted for the $400 featherbed.

I think my wife might object to any skanks hovering over me or any of my bikes...LOL

Ugh, wives are sensitive to security issues, especially where your time attention and money goes. Word of advice to get Featherelastic accepted as family, is get wive a gift and rattle can paint the frame being worked on in her favorite color, then refinish when its ripe to spring your real tastes on her. Yet with such a special frame adaptation I'll bet a light highlighted frame will be a head turner.

I was talking with my dad about it and he mentioned chrome or nickel. That could be very interesting..

Well, this one will probably end up sitting for a while (I'm still trying to push to get the 850 done, $8000 later!), but at least I've got the major parts I need to do it..

Hi

Don't Chrome the frame as it will weaken the metal, I worked as a chromer in my younger years and got a lot of bike bits chromed, I was surprised how short of time things were cracking and broken welds after they were chromed, so don't chrome major parts, cosmic parts are OK but any thing that needs to be strong leave alone just paint them.

OH yes very serious issue, like when old rim chromed, bad ju ju calle Hydrogen Embrittlement. Nickle plating seems to have similar issues on my brief search review to bone up it. IIRC good chrome has Cu 1st then Ni then few layers of Cr.
Yet there are a lot of examples of Ni frames out there being dirt raced to playing road racer as a Cdo. Dirt races say the layer rubs of in a season where mud, sand and boots rub.

See what I mean, motorcycles are competition to women for a guy heart strings that connect to his deeper groin roots. Ms Peel may have a one of a kind frame finish, but will be out of rattle cans from now on for easy touch up.

Sounds like my 850! Rattle cans are just fine. FWIW, my dad does a better rattle can job than I could ever hope to do with correct equipment and GOOD paint!

That is a Featherbed, but it has been modified somewhat. The front motor mounts, the back ones too and it looks like there are some added brackets near the tank mounts. I think you should mock up your bike before even thinking about powder coating it. The serial number should be on the vertical motor mount plate on the left side. I am willing to bet it had a Triumph engine in it at some point and the owner welded the brackets on rather than use bolted engine plates.

It's supposedly been modified to fit a Commando motor/trans. Whether that's true or not remains to be seen. We will indeed mock it up before sending it off for powder.

I looked all over the motor mount plate on the left side and saw no numbers. My only guess is that the number must have been welded over when they put those new brackets on. Hope that doesn't keep me from getting this thing titled!

When I titled my basket case I used the engine number, Wisconsin DMV was fine with it.
