Hi. I recently bought a 1968 Fastback and have a couple of questions about fenders. The front fender on this bike is aluminum, and has the correct bridge, stays, shape etc. Most of the literature says that the 1968 front fender was chromed steel. But one source (Bacon?) says that the early 1968 bikes came with an alloy front fender. My bike is an early 1968, and I don't want to ditch the front fender if it is correct. Thoughts?

The rear fender is a stainless from a roadster. The original should be painted, has a different shape, and tucks up under the tail. When I use the original factory part number with the parts suppliers, they either tell me that I am looking for the wrong fender, or they tell me they don't have it. So I'm thinking of modifying the stainless fender, trimming it at the front end and mounting it so the rear end stops where the original would, half way down the number plate. Any one tried this? And any leads or comments on the correct fender?

I believe British Cycle Supply still has rear fastback fenders.

(The chrome fender on this page is not a Fastback fender, but actually a Production Racer fender)
As for an aluminum front Commando fender, I have never heard of or seen an original fender in aluminum. All parts books call for a chrome fender (narrow style).

When you find a fastback rear fender make sure you get the right one. There are at least two versions - early for early fastback oil tank and '71 and later that fits the smaller, later oil tank.

The part number listed by British cycle is correct for the early fender. The part number listed for the chrome fender is the correct number for the 1971 model with the oil tank cover. (Again the chrome fender they list under that part number is incorrect). The difference is in the mounting holes, with the later style mounting like the chrome and stainless Roadster/Interstate fenders.

For a '68 you want the one with only a single front mounting hole.
