Exhaust threads repair

Hi fiatfan

Peter (Seager engineering) has done a variety of jobs for me & the results have always been first class. Rebores, crank regrinds, checked myconrods for ovality & straightness. Put my parts through a hot wash & cleaned out my cylinder head when the person who worked on my Daytona head cleaned it with steel shot! One good engineer & fair prices.
Not had him do an exhaust thread yet but if Steve Maney stops doing that I would not hesitate to use Peter.

Any top quility machinest will have no troubles machining bronze inserts for these heads, I was a T/A to maintenance fitters for over 15 years and I would have no problem in doing these repairs.
I was rebuilding my mate's Norton motor and one of his exhaust threads was a bit gone on the bottom of the exhaust thread but the previous owner has done the 4 stud job on the head but the studs were lose in the threads, the four stud repair is a bit of a rough job and just don't look right, lot easier to do the bronze inserts and do the job properly.
I looked into buying the the large tap for this repair I think it was just over $300 for the right tap but I ended up repairing the thread without machining as the damaged thread was at the bottom of the port and about 25 mm damage.
I might still buy the tap and I think it would pay for itself in a short time, even used to clean the old threads that can be saved it would be well used over time.

Fiatfan,
I know a guy who had a company here in the Netherlands who did this kind of repair work, he also was involved in classic racing, prepaired racing bikes, did a lot of machining etc. He moved to Sweden a couple of year ago , but is still doing this this work (although on a smaller scale)
You could give it a try , PM me if you are interested and I will send the details.

That sounds really good!

Got my head back from Seager this week.Very pleased.new springs, valves recut, head faced, valve angled/cut,fin repair, and aqua blasted.

Norman White did the inserts on my Atlas head, very neat and Norman always a delight to deal with.
Ah that's good to know, thanks for sharing! I'd always trust work to Norman out of preference, a lovely chap, he's probably my nearest option too.

ended up going there ~ 30 years ago & worked well,

Exhaust threads repair

since it's already done i'd keep going with it using stainless steel studs,
