I'm putting my exhaust back together and debating whether to put the tab washers on. I had the nut come loose on one side and took the washer off and put it back together without it and it seemed to stay okay.
Right now if I leave the other one out there is maybe a 1/16" gap between the head and the exhaust nut when it is tightened down. Does the nut need to be tightened against the face of the head to stay tight or will this work?

Ditto , the rings are bad news ,rattling a loosened nut and retaining it as loose to chatter at threads secretly. Use New crush washers. I use Honda CB 350 copper tube ring type , with copper high temp RTV silicone to threads , then tighten hard with proper tool . Ride until hot , come back to the garage and tighten up hard once again. Use all your strength. That's how I approach it and have never had back off or rattling or blowby issues. Others have their own special ways including lockwiring ideas. :|

My thoughts are keep them. I lost a thread through not having them. Also new exhaust washers are a must

"Should I use safety wire on my Commando"

"Only on the parts you want to keep." ;)

I'm a big S wire fan and I wire all those parts I want to keep. ;)

Go to my post on page 8 of [http://www.accessnorton.com/parts-you-regret-buying-t20038-105.html#p265152] this link, the locking rings are only a problem for those who do not understand how to use them. And yes, replace the crush washers--some combinations of pipe flange type and exhaust nut may even require two each side to have the nut tighten down without hitting the head first.

I never use them. Tighten down, get the engine hot and re-tighten. Unless you have other issues with bad threads, out of round nuts etc. you should be good to go.
