Exhaust nut question

The exhaust nuts (063988) are the same (all 850).
The 065260 Mk3 collets are 'one piece' (x2) and what AN sells instead of the previous 063990 x4.
yes - my collets are 2-piece, not the one piece currently sold. they have an internal chamfer that matches the flare of the header pipe. i do remember they were a PITA to install. on the subject of exhaust nuts, can't comment. i do know that i have new (AN) parts and they differ from my originals. AN list them as "short" and they are dimensionally shorter that my originals, so i'm assuming there was originally a "long" version.

The original setup was no bargain. Alignment with the crossover pipe was critical and the head pipes tended to crack at the welds. Perhaps someone figured that the MKIII design was superior and opted to take their chances with it.
...and not matter what the point is, there's always a counterpoint.

"Long" are '750' (two types) as the 750 exhaust didn't have the balance pipe so didn't use the collets.

ANOTHER QUESTION FOR L.A.B. -- the AN parts site shows the exhaust for the Mk3 as the insterstate version, but no roadster. never gave this any thought, but i'm thinking there was a 75 Mk3 roadster - ????
An inexhaustible supply of opinions... Enough to drive ya nuts!
amen to that!

can't say and can't proved one way or another. if someone previously replaced the header pipes, why would they go with the Mk3 design, especially since there's collets, conical washers, and exhaust nuts that would also have to be replaced. why wouldn't they just order up the same replacement Mk2 parts?
I went to get MK2A balanced pipes in the 90's, none available so I bought MK3 balanced pipes and the matching hardware to match including the spherical seats.

Eleven years ago it was t'other way round for me...

Joe's bike was built the same day as mine, and I would bet it was assembled with the same 850 MKI style head pipes.
Does your Mk2 also have a Mk3 frame that Joe's Mk2 has?

What defines a Mk3 frame? I have the reinforced rear loop, but my seat isn't hinged.
It also has the unique MKII swingarm spindle with welch plugs.

up until a couple weeks ago, i didn't know i had a Mk3 frame - no expert, but i think it has something to do with the bracket detail at the upper shock mounts ...

Yes, the LH outer plate for the Mk3 hinged seat and RH inner for the seat lock.

LH inner?

Amazing...this endless 76 posts about how to keep those nuts unscrewing and stripping the cylinder head. From one side, crowd arguing they never had problems and other those who had some and shared the way to avoid it. It looks like a religion's war. I raise the white flag. Good luck I leave !

i think we've morphed beyond the exhaust nuts. religious war - ??? - nobody's died yet - ;)

(re: post #12) i'm sorry, not seeing how the nut can skip from tab to another - ??? - either i'm missing something, or i'm not understanding the problem at hand.

Exhaust nut question

In regards to the variety of application using the exhaust tabs......
When I first reassembled my exhaust (74 850 w/crossover) I turned one tab into the head between the fins and the other tab into the exhaust nut between its fins.
I gave it a hard look, rode it a bit and decided it just was not an effective safeguard from my perspective, regardless of configuration or tab direction, so I ditched them.
The pipes are flared and the nut was almost bottoming out...just didn't feel right.

I use anti-seize on the threads with aircraft crush washers still employing the spherical flange and the split pipe collar
My son gave me the "special" tightening tool for my birthday and I used it to tighten the nuts on a hot engine, no sledge hammer involved.
They have not budged since I installed them and I check regularly.

I knew you would want yet another bit of input Joe. :D
