electronic speedometer installation

someone has done this, no doubt. Any tips on installing, wiring, calibration on the Smiths Electronic speedometer. M75 Mk 111

Dump the ugly speedo cable and get the magnetic sensor option.
I glued a strong ceramic magnet from Hobby Lobby onto my rear drum with wired optional sensor taped to chainguard.
Calibrate using instructions (not fun) but once done it is spot on.

Instructions are stopping me , so if anyone can post their own clearer one we can proceed on this without shorts. Same bike MK 111 76.

"Not Fun" is the kindest comment I have read about it! Having done it myself, I'd call it a ROYAL F^$%#^K pain in the a$$! I exhausted all the swear words I know and had to come up with some new combinations of them to get me through it.

+1 Mike. It is a job I dread having done it twice now.

But, IMHO, if you allocate the time, clear yer head, and just slowly and carefully follow the instructions and check / double check each step, it all goes quite smoothly.

The number of wires and complexity involved is staggering, and scarey at first glance. But break it down, follow each step, check as you go, and you should be fine.

Yes it is an afternoon job for sure, I ran power off an open slot on the switch and mounted a momentary switch near the ignition switch to toggle between the trip tic and odometer. Used the bolts for the coil mounts for ground. Take your time, solder all the wire joints with shrink wrap and having just returned from a 500 mile round trip, they worked flawlessly. Did the suggested calibration process but found the conversion factor had to be altered to make the speedo more accurate to my GPS. I am running Avon RoadRiders 100/90-19 and the conversion factor was 1060 instead of the calculated 975. This makes the odometer about 4% UNDER actual miles. I choose to have the speedo be accurate and not the odometer. Overall I am pleased with the update. Never hurts to have a beer or single malt handy!

Hmmm...I'll bet you're right; someday I'll have to try that sort of logical process!
