It looks awful heavy. Maybe drill a few holes to lighten it up a bit. :lol:

Anything to get rid of those unsightly stock coils flapping beneath the tank. Other makes (Triumph, BSA etc) managed to hide them - I don't know why Norton didn't try harder.

I use the CNW unit as I also have the TriSparks electronic unit (supplied by CNW) and that is what I was told is compatible. It is somewhat pricey, but, like all stuff from CNW is beautifully put together, has appropriate powdercoated brackets and additional fasteners, as well as excellent high-tension plug wires. One slight problem is that you'll need to get a bit creative if you also use an Andover Norton steering stabiliser - sorted out in about 15 minutes.

Why on earth, when you had a fresh piece of stock, did you STILL use the intermediate steel bracket, instead of simply fabbing up one new custom fit bracket to bolt directly to the frame tabs?

We've GOT to push this single issue to more pages than the kill switch thread. (if it already is more pages, it's still not enough)
 
I made the same sort of bracket but not as nice. My reason for keeping the one that is there already was that I wanted to keep the reflectors and also there is a brace for the steering damper which attaches to it. (Yes I could have made an entirely new bracket.) Does inherent laziness count as an excuse?

Do you really feel that you need the steering stabilizer? With my bracket you can still use the reflectors, I think.
 
Humpf, I threw away most of what was left surrounding Peels many air holes and fabbed up an alloy custom bottom brace plate knowing full well a steering damper shoots a good handling motorcycle in its front foot. You'll have to duck down to see Peels coil if that's worth any points besides to me. The most supreme delight of Commandos is their effortless guidance so seems backwards to add mass that adds to pilot drag. But completely understand the little highs of getting a piece to work out even better than planned so actually grinning in pleasure at swoohsdave savoring his journey with us.

I have been thinking about removing the steering damper. The twitchiness when hitting bumps in sweepers (that Hobot speaks about) and self oscillation when snapping the throttle shut, both there since new, went away completely when I put on a Dave Taylor head steady a couple years ago. Also added a Windy front link this past Spring and it is stone stable now. I could probably hit a big fat woodchuck while leaned over now and keep right on going.

I really like the head & front steadies. Have never needed or installed a steering damper. I definitely want to incorporate a bottom/rear link to complete the triangulation of the steady system and push it hard to see how it feels (although I'm fairly certain I know the outcome will be positive)

Well, a woodchuck is smaller than a goat, so you may be ok.
 
You could remove the intermediate bracket and make a mount out of a piece of angle, no reflector mounts though.

If you have a clean slate and a nice piece of stock, you can easily create a single bit that would bolt straight up to the frame and provide mounting for all the various bits.

I remember why I kept the extra bracket, I'm was going to mount the turn signals to it. Small LED ones. See where those wire are coming out? That was the theory at least.
