How is the price of beer doing? I got two surgeries in Cairns from Dr. Mansfield which cost me about 1/10th what they would have cost here in the US. You should have seen their faces when I put down a credit card instead of an Aus medical card! Good surgeries too. I would go back again. And, I was on a tourist visa.
Cheers, Dan.

Dan we have free Hostipals here as well a private insurance for those that want quicker service, but our emergeny dept. at hostipals are free, but the Goverment of today would very much like to go down the American way, but if they did it they would be kicked out of office at the next election, we pay 1% on our tax for medicare and a lot of doctors bulkbill and our pensioners and poor get a healthcare card for free medical and dental servises.

I almost emigrated to AU in 1969/1970. Tha Aussie govt was willing to cut me a heck of a deal. The only reason I did not, was my college debt....it would have effectively doubled, as the AU dollar was only worth 0.55 $US at the time.

After reading your woes, I am glad I stayed home.

The Australian way of doing government medical is the only way I can see it working in the US. The private insurance and hospitals are still in place along side of the "free medical." All the Aussies I have heard talk about it love it a lot but they were all poor by big picture standards. :) (less than 100,000 per year)

I have always worked my whole life on low wages, but I have also brought up my family and have saved hard for my toys and I own my house, and now I have retied at 55, the thing that gets up my nose is we pay to high a price for things that should be cheaper and now I have to make my supa last till I can get the pension at 67, the Gov. just wants everone to keep working till they drop, not this bunny, but with all our wows the best thing with us Aussies is our mateship, it don't matter how depress things get there will always be mates to help out over a beer or 2 or many many more and most of the problem have never been made by nomal poeple, only poeple in high places have made it hard for everyone else, such is life as our famous bushranger said before they hung him.

9 am and the beer fridge is empty.

Australia like the USA is a country where its what you make of it.
I do alright, paying up to $1700 tax a week seems excessive sometimes but you have to be a contributor.
There is a lot of welfare abuse here and someone has to pay for it (the workers)

The sad thing is this pretty much sums up the daily news, day in day out.
Let off with a slap on the wrist is normal for the justice system here.

The only solace is I get to live on a quiet dead end road (across from the jetty) so you can get away from reality for a bit.

The levy is based on your income, the harder you work the more you earn and so the more you pay for medical.
You then need private cover also otherwise the government levy is increased substantially.
Expensive but nothing like you read of USA hospital bills.

I would not change things though, I have worked on near all the major LNG projects in this country, another five years and I am done.
Love the work until then.

Time Warp it is good that you have a high paying job but not all Aussies are lucky enough and most only live on minumin wages, think about the older poeple who worked hard all their lives, there was no such thing as Supa and when they finished work only receive a small govment pension that they can only bearly live on, yes there are a lot of poeple around that abuses the welfair system, but there are also a lot that need it and there will always be unemployment, my oldest daughter has Epilepsy and has only had 2 attacks in 2 years, she want a job so much but as soon as she tell the prospect employer that she has it and by law she has to tell them, they don't even want to know her and always give some excuse, there are law here that cover discrimation but its still happens.

So think about the poeple who don't have high payed jobs, I never had one and struggled to bring up my family, but we did it on one low wage, I feel sorry for the young ones these days with such high prices for houses and the GOV is worried about poeple having children at a late age and not as many, after paying their bills and morage and both parteners working to cover everything I wonder why.

Think about all the old Aussie companies that have packed up and left for overseas and why, the GOV is always bashing it in our heads that our wages are to high here, so you are luck that you are enjoying a high wage life and good luck to you if you get another 5 years of it, look at mining most owned by oversea intrest and 90% of the profits leave our country, I know I didn't cause this to happen.
