Do You Ride W/ Lights On In Daylight?

Doing some maintenance and finally got around to mounting the Sparx 210 watt kit. It was fairly simple other than a little machining of the rotor bore ( it was too tight on the crank) and some reaming of the mounting holes on the stator to get it centered on the rotor with the proper clearance. The old Lucas magnet had no clearance at about 4-5 o'clock and showed signs of actually rubbing so it was probably off from the factory. Fortunately it was still in good shape and didn't come apart and lock things up.
A 100 mile test ride this afternoon showed much improvement. Burning the headlight constantly with no problem and showing full charge at 2000 rpm with lights on. With headlight on and the brake light it discharges just slightly. I think it is a good solution to the State- mandated day time headlight issue. It works for me and I sure enjoyed ripping out all of the old oilsoaked cloth coverd wire loom and capacitor, rectifier and zener. The Sparx solid state rectifier does a great job of limiting the current to the battery. Modern electronics are great for daily riders!!

NO FAIR LAUGHING AT MY RED NECK HIGH TECH CATCH BOTTLE!! :D

It's the law here in Massachusetts too, but I would do it regardless. I run a 55/60W Raybrig H-4 on a relay-controlled direct feed from the battery and use the high-beam during the day. Thinking about adding a modulator too; I use those in a couple other bikes and I think they greatly increase your conspicuity.

No problems charging with a Sparx three-phase. That, the relay connection and the H-4 bulb (with an appropriate halogen-specific reflector) are all well advised upgrades.

And BTW, your bike is gorgeous. Love the color especially.

I've never understood people that fight for non safety. Some of my riding buddies want wear there helmets because they don't want people telling them what they should or should not do in the form of safety. I love life and I want to stay around as long as possible. I bought the three phase sparx unit just so I could burn the high watt H4 headlight without problems. I love the old norton but I would rather not die on it.

In college our friend Jack's dad was killed. I think he was in his 70s and riding his Harley back from visitinng his girlfriend in
his Stearman biplane. He was hit by a log truck if I recall.
We all thought that was an admirable way to check out.

Hi Steven,

The right to choose is a basic American liberty. I'm in the middle regarding safety. My choice is a full helmet because I don't enjoy getting hit in the mouth with bugs and gravel. I choose not to run with headlights unless in dark surroundings. To be totally safe on a motorcycle - don't ride them. Everything else is statistical. Do you feel lucky?

Regards,

David
