The main thing which has held both the British and Australians back has probably been our respect for university degrees.  I worked in Australian factories where there were about 5 levels in the hierarchy. One of the foremen pointed out that engineers often asked his advice and then sent him a written directive to do what he had suggested should be done.  I do not think the Japanese work that way. When I work, I do not care what qualifications other people have - higher lor lower, I pick their brains. I have built about 5 classic motorcycles out of parts - I have never met an engineer who has done similar.

The aircraft factory in which I once worked was closed - they flew an aircraft before assessing the results of a wind-tunnel test. Australia no longer makes aircraft. Attention to detail ?
