Cylinder head hardware

Hi all

Can anyone confirm that the cylinder head nut that comes up from the underside of the barrel at the back has no washer. Is this correct?

It has been argued that the washer was left off in order to get enough threads into the nut to achieve 30 pounds of torque. The same argument suggested that custom studs should be made that are slightly longer (4mm) in order to accommodate a washer in this location. The same stud could be made a bit longer where it goes into the alloy to help achieve the torque without tearing out. It's common to find Helicoils in this location.

There are old threads about this somewhere.

Really,! so what is the folk lore regarding the lack of washers on the sleeve nuts?

Bit puzzled that the threads often fail.....but you can't apply enough torque?

Never mind, if there were washers specified I don't suppose I could guarantee to get one in there whilst juggling the nut on my fingertip!

The longer stud idea is from old conversations here in this forum. I used my old head bolts (3/8" X 26 tpi) to make the studs. I've had my head off with the longer stud without removing the engine from the frame.

Edit: I may have removed the front iso bolt to give extra clearance when removing the head.
