Yeah , curious too about the battery problem . Is it a short that causes the ig to die ? Would it run with the battery disconnected ?

Norton made a special effort to produce a bike that would run with a dead battery. That blue thing is supposed to make it go!
I've never tried mine out to see if it works, perhaps they fail after forty +years of use. Ive always wondered if the bike would run in a situation like this, dead battery sucking power from the charging system.
It may be that unhooking the battery would improve odds.
The other consideration is that the backup ignition power was designed to work with the original points, not with electronic ignition. Point coil ignition will continue work to a lower voltage level than most e ignitions, especially boyer, which doesnt seem to work below about 11.5 volts, near as I can tell.

Yep, with the original ignition system (points) the bike will (kick) start/run without a battery. It will do neither with an e-ignition.

Especially a Boyer - it likes to have 12 volts.
With points, a couple of kicks will charge up the capacitor enough to light a spark

I must have kicked the bike like 50 times and nothing! Fuel was getting through the carbs but the battery was dead. Would unscrewing the battery increased my odds? I have original points and no EI.

Yes, take the fuse out. If you disconnect the battery, only undo the positive (ground) side or you have to insulate the negative lead. If you take out the fuse and re-screw the holder together, no chance to ground out, though a slight possibility of the wires inside the fuse holder coming together, unless you put something non-conductive in place of the fuse.

STARTING on the 2MC is Just like a Mag. ( neto )

PRIME the eliktrikery . Ign. OFF . Swing Through Twice . Do all the hoopla / get set . turn Ign. ON . Jump on footcrank ( kickstart :? ) .

Disconect battery while running . ( dont drop terminal ) and she should stay running . NEVER had a battery on mine . saves weight . good for 0.002 sec.s in the quater mile .

( 2MC capactor is just that . stores the energy from the alternator . briefly .Enough to cover the Coils on a Std. ( contact breaker ) Ign. anyway . hows about the Pazon ?
dunno what they draw , and time lag / drain . Should be transtorised ? capacitors available nowadays . :? )

ANYWAY . if you leave youre lights on , or anything . It wont charge / discharge , on / for start up . So switch on ONLY Ignition after swinging through ( fully ) twice to charge .
For those less agile , 3 or 4 , OR , you should be able to swing it over more on the E.S.

Saved getting acid fumes over the paintwork / chome too . Think Lucas figured Mags ( magnetos ) were To Expensive after 1965 .
Typical cheapskate cost cutting ' progressive ' move .

Most of the stuff , its the ' Dreaded ' machanic . Now a dreaded ' fitter ' was required . As per those JPN suckers . puff puff .

The Privateer had to grow his own . 8)

I had the same symptoms this summer as the OP, which stranded me in a parking lot for a few hours while I isolated every circuit to see if this switch or that was the culprit. I finally broke down and called my wife who brought me a spare battery and it fired up right away. It ended up being the 2MC which killed the battery.
On a related note, after work today, I found that I had left the recently installed grip heaters on all day, and with Pazon and disconnected and still dead 2MC, no starting. When my wife arrived she cheerfully remarked "I haven't had a rescue in a while". Nice, but it still feels a little ridiculous riding along in a minivan wearing leathers and foul weather gear.
