Reassembling the primary drive and the cupped washer behind the clutch drum (#56) has me a little puzzled. To me, it should fit over and around the circlip (#55) locating the clutch. However once installed, the washer just presses up against it.

Have I got the wrong sized circlip or am I over thinking this?

Photos to follow.

Thanks

The circlip is just the plan wire ring type.
The hardened spacer fits with the recess to the clip so clip goes inside the spacer and is then trapped meaning as the clutch nut is tightened the clip cannot jump out of its slot.
Dont forget extra shims may be needed between the spacer and clutch to line up the chain or belt with the engine sprocket.

The clip is made of square wire, fits inside the counterbore of the spacer. Remember, clutch hub nut torque value published is WRONG, use 40 ft. lb. instead.
"Cupped washer" sounds wrong...

Thanks.

I thought that was the case. All makes sense now. Hopefully out for a ride Sunday (although it snowed here last night).

The actual spacer is rather thick and has a recess on one side that goes up against the circlip and is #54 not #55 or #56 they are flat and and different thickness for use as shims for chain alignment so make sure you have #54 part number 06-0747 cupped washer.

Just to be clear the clip is #53 060752 Circlip, Clutch Location.

Just to add to some confusion. Part number 06-8072 Circlip which is used in the MKIII electric start backfire device assembly is more robust. This clip is slightly thinker and with some light filing will fit the slot.

Also, burr toward the gearbox, not toward the clutch.

I add this information because I feel it is critical to drive train integrity and reliability.

FWIW
The main shaft 06-0572 circlip are known to sometimes be manufactured incorrectly. Just like a piston ring that is to big.
When installed on the shaft the ends of the ring shut and don't really seat to the bottom of the mainshaft groove....ie..no gap. Then you try to put the 06-0747 and it will not seat over the circlip. It gets ugly after that.
Moral of the story ....make sure the ring will seat in the spacer recess before installation on the mainshaft.
Fettlling is required.

+1. Ditch tab washer, clean threads and nut well, add a spot of blue loctite.

+1 :?: The tab washer and nut are outboard of the clutch center. :!:

The discussion is about the back side of the clutch. Concours is IMO right to question the term "cupped washer"
06-0747 is a very hard, .170" thick, .052" counter bored support platform that is supported by the square section circlip.
