That one is a piece of cake, just lye or acid boil the crap out and off of it, JBW in dents dings after roughening of etching surface then grind/sand back nice, coat insides with favorite belief in some product then ready for new cap and taps and paint and wax then gasoline even with booze in it.
 
Ross T. is your man should you grab this severely damaged tank. Looks like crash then burn. Notice how the gas cap is burnt on the right side and the front rightside burnt area as well. So the bike was most likely smacked over ( by car ?) from the left side , then gas ignited as it dribbled out of the popped open cap ? Just a scenario to ponder. Norton reversed the opening direction of the gascaps to prevent fuel spraying backwards towards the driver ,maybe someone knows when, I think 1972.
 
Norton reversed the opening direction of the gas cap so you would not catch your nuts on them on your way over the handle bars when old Miss Daisy left turned ya. About 1970. :mrgreen:

Yes it was 1972. All steel tanks as far as I know have the safer cap opening with the hinge at the rear.

That particular tank on ebay without the raised edge seam is the type fitted to the 850 MkIII Roadster.
 
Yeah ,because some poor souls were burning to a crisp. But protecting the family jewels is an added benefit for sure.
 
Ross T is a magician!!, the tank will come back (at least) as good as new. Bring your wallet, you'll need it.

Wes's HyRyder '71 tiny fiber tank has front hinge that flips its lid up towards the bars while my '72 Roader steel tank and my '72 fiber IS tank both have rear hinge so flips lid up to the rear. But hey its Norton so luck of the draw till the last old item in bin used up.
 
yeah, cut off the bottom, hammer and dolly, and shrink the high bits areas, and weld the bottom back on. Good if you have an original to make a pattern to get the curves right. Most the the guys that know this are no longer with us or far into retirement, or very good to find.
 
+1 for Ross Thompson. He took my old battered Dominator front fender and made it look like new. Probably better than new. Metal magician he is!!
 
At that price I'd grab it if I were you. I have a similar one that is damaged (not quite as bad ad that one) but the Previous owner used compressed air to pop out the worst part of the dent. It holds fuel and is not rusty inside so I'm leaving it as is. I'm not entering it in bike shows anyway. Good price if it stays there and no one else wants it. Cj
It might work well for you for, until something else shows up that is priced somwwhere in the middle between full restoration on that one and a used un-dented one :D
 
If you are after a steel tank in the UK cheapest option is Interpol on ebay, got both of mine for less than £40 with no dings at all, got both powdercoated for less than £25 each. You need to do some work on an interstate seat to move the mounting brackets but thats the hardest bit.
