Good Point Dances,
We use to get our lift truck forks inspected that way.
Another option.
Cheers,
Thomas

The 'new crank is getting closer, Started in Iowa and left Tokyo tonight.
It should be in Australia by the morning and delivered this week with a bit of luck.
I might have to get that new cylinder head out of the box it has been in since September 2016.

Cracked crankshaft

I picked this up a couple years ago. It has 89k miles on it. Pretty sure someone has done the rear end at some point.

Just in from Iowa and there is only one person in the world who would wrap a crankshaft up this well let alone have such a good one tucked away.
The journals mic'd up, as new.
A major thanks to Mike and Kelly. (mikesvintagecycleparts)

I have bought a few parts off them over the last 'few years and every time has been a pleasure not to mention getting exactly what was promised, this was no exception.
Good people and a credit to the Norton community.

The picture doesn't really show how nice it is.

Time warp,

Always a pleasure my Friend!

Mike

Well Timewarp,

A little after midnight here in Iowa and I just finished up posting 21 listings for 750 Commando & 1967 P11 parts to start this Sunday. Many items just as nice as the 850 crank you purchased. Hope the weather is warmer where you are, 0°F here right now.

Cheers,
Mike

I know I am daft, but not only do I wonder how you end up with a crack like that but whether you might get away with running it!

(Yeah, I know, too scary to contemplate)

I'm with you. I wonder how long it's been there and how long it would run like that?

and..
what would happen if it let go just as you hit 6000 rpm in third passing a long line of cars, fully loaded Semi coming at you??

Glen

Do you suppose the OP's crank was repaired at some point in its life? Spray welded or something, or maybe it was aftermarket?

If I worried about stuff like that, I'd have to leave the old crocks at home. Since no one seems to have seen a crack like his before much less the catastrophic failure of such a crack, we're in highly speculative territory here.

And I wasn't suggesting it be put back in and run like that, but it might make a fun test bench/dyno run experiment.

Greetings Danno, it seems a crack on that D/S journal is not new, there was a MkIII crankshaft with a similar crack posted on facebook which even had a link to this thread. Others posted of cracking also.

My Mk2a was a stock crank journal, stock bore engine with 20xxx miles on the clock and looked to have not had the cases spilt

Still looking for a D/S cheek to replace that one.

If you’re not gonna use the crank it would be very iimteresting to cut through it and see what the crack looks like inside the metal.
