I went into town today to get some stuff at the autoparts store. There's snow on the ground and it's rock hard, so it's below freezing. As I wait at a light I see a single headlight (daytime) coming toward the intersection. I think to myself, "Wow, that guy is a tough bastard riding in this cold weather. The light turns green and we are approaching each other and as I pass him, I can't believe my eyes.....

The guy is wearing a jacket and SHORTS... o_O

I had a mate that I grew up with like that he had something wrong with his amune system where he didn't feel the cold he use to ride his Kawa 1000 all through winter just wearing his cut off jacket and jeans, everyone though he was mad, but one year he did get pretty sick from the cold and neally died from it, he is still alive to this day but haven't seen him for about 30 years.

I worship the great god Gerbings when it comes to riding in sub 40F temps. I worked around a guy years ago who worked in an open flannel shirt and t-shirt even when it was below freezing. 4 or 5 layers was hardly enough for me.

On my cross country ride of spring ‘17 warmest morning start temp was +6C , coolest was -4C with frost on seat most mornings .... heated grips and vest paid for themselves every day !

I fitted my old 99 with an uprated Alt and now luxuriate in my heated jacket and grips, A satnav keeps me on track and an electric chain oiler keeps things easy. An onboard compressor for tyres and a charging point for my phone. But how I keep the brain powered??!.

Even with heated gear, it was still cold (23F) along the Shenandoah in November.

Spent a year as a military dispatch rider. Lucky to have done it in the southern parts of the country. Only a couple of weeks below 0 degrees F. Only once had problem with cold weather which gave me a week off at the hospital with pneumonia. The equipment was up to the task.

0 degree F is damn cold , proper layers , heated liners and good outer wear help ...

Stonewall Jackson country !

Would love to ride there one day.

Is it good ?
Many great riding roads in that area-Skyline Drive, Blue Ridge Parkway (both of which were closed on our ride due to an earlier ice storm that took down hundreds of tree limbs and whole trees). There's also US 33 in the Virginia/West Virginia border area, Rt. 16, known as The Back of the Dragon and hundreds of lesser-known mountain and valley roads. Do it if you get a chance.
