Go to 10:50 take a look at the little springs twixt the plates. Seeing how when I pull a clutch I often see at least one set of plates stuck together I wonder if this might work for our bikes?
The rest of the video is of interest to those of us who have little or no non old brit bike time. The whole gearbox and transmission is so job rated and well thought out and this was exactly the sort of thing that sunk the UK bike industry.

Having liked and worked on triples since 1977.....
Those maybe nearly 50 year old expander rings look to be doing little (now) and you could remove them unless you lived in a very cold climate and the bike sat. (The transmission/gearbox > oil < being two stroke separate made a difference also)
I doubt they could be used (the design) in a Commando clutch easily.

A good deal of Japanese bikes have a different bottom friction plate to allow a single ring and one wave washer but that is more to do with chatter on take up.

I routinely faced the checked to be flat steels and cleaned the fibres with Acetone, I can see no future sticking with the not an engine oil being used.
The Commando clutch is not that bad and better than many from the period. (with narrow band frictions)
