My Commando life style motto seems a simple - Ugh.

Went to adjust the triplex and drive chain before valve adjustment to hear this clinkGong sound - coming from the drop of LH intake valve, it seems. I assume push rod is not seated in the lifter, didn't seem to notice prior, ugh. What do I do?
Nothing till back from Texas Mile relief.

Put a degree disc on the crank and turn it in the correct direction i.e. anti-clockwise. Set the both LH and RH rocker valve clearance to 0.016". Record the point of initial LH exhaust valve lift and the point of closing. This should correspond to the spec in the manual. If you can, measure the valve lift and compare it to the RH exhaust. If there is any signifcant variation the possible causes are: Pushrod cup not seated in rocker ball end, pushrod cup sleeve loose on pushrod or cam follower stellite shoe coming loose. Try to rotate the motor in the operating direction, the mainshaft nut should not come undone.
I anticipate the head is going to have to come off.

Oh man that is great advice to guide my depressed mind on next step to do.
LH valve drops faster it seems than the other, as if slipping off a lip.
Will have to wait till next week - stole some time today from trip prep.

Hi Hobot

You seem to have some bad luck with your bike, hope things work out and you have some luck come your way, my only bad luck at the moment is my Norton has spat me off twice now in the last 4 months on the road, lucky it was at slow speed, but that seems to do more damage to myself.

Take care and hope things work out for you soon.

Ashley

Steve, You know it's not that big a deal. Pull the head of and start over making sure the rods are correct as you get it tightened. Good Grief, I knocked the head and jugs off today just to get the new stainless nuts on the crank studs. Had to remove the headers and headsteady, and still had time for lunch and going out for dinner. And you don't even have the rocker covers on, I installed the new neoprene RGM gaskets while I was at it, and I'm old to boot.

Oh No Ashley, that really touches a cord with me, literally. This sure is a man hood testing hobby, physically, emotionally financially, self respectfully - ugh.
Sometimes I just don't feel lucky enough to ride, others smile wiped off instantly. I take your blessing to heart and reflect the same.

Dave I've one word for your encouraging words, "SmartASS"! But I know its possible and wouldn't have known you were spoofing me but for SS crank nuts. You are spoofing me right? Please.

With the ends of the rocker ground down so push rods puzzle solved 1st time every time, I've changed a blown head gasket in ~29 min on lunch break in order to get back to daily living-commuting-joy riding on Ms Peel. Her over rev broke my heart and my constant adventures. Wes might have installed that rod, don't know, we didn't hear this out of order clinkGong prior. hm.

SAY WHAT! Correct Direction? Smacking fore head rolling eyes with tail bewteen legs, UGH, on way to back from work, reviewed my mental video, seems it made noise only turning back ass wards, but I was in a fog of turning clockwise after nipping up the rotor nut and having oriented the clutch block to only hook up clockwise. ugh- back in a few minutes to test your theory - I goofed again.
I just fogged over on 1st reading your obvious revelation only thinking of the valve measures hassle on top of removing head, till ride in after dark, the 1st sentence jumped out highlighted in mind, Here's hoping....

Steve, Yeah, I've turned it in the wrong direction to, trying to figure out the timing. Doesn't work to good, took me at least 2 days to figure out. Duh, duh, duh. Sometimes you should look at the rear wheel while turning things.

I'm not sure the noise will go away with turning right direction, but worth a try. Yes, got bottom cylinder nuts on today, having to remove headers, head steady, and knocking up the jugs without removing the head. Luckily, the Hylomar on the jug gasket was not completely sealed and broke off easily without disturbing the gasket. All back together now and going to bed.

I turned crank counter clockwise > for a new hound dog cocked head puzzlement moment, the clingGong sound switched to the LH exht vavle not intake. hm.
Looked close at exht valve to see it catch and release in a sideways jerk at full lift. hm. Maybe just maybe valve stem was hanging up in the hollow of the rocker with the adjuster backed out. Sooo, screwed em in for a by gosh/by golly set near normal lash - held breath and turned - anticlockwise- to hear essentially- Nothing!!
Hot Dog!

I had a good omen on entering my shed - I was straffed by two large bats, so I entertained them tinging on head and making hi pich whistles which caused one to aim right at my face and almost brush hair on way pass. I love it, healthy bats w/o white nose disease and healthy head w/o white knuckle syndrome : )

Okay, we've gone from dead goats to healthy bats.

What's next?

See you in a couple of days to discuss in-depth...

Hehe, Glad to share the saga motorcycling, especially these obsolete beasts expose us too. This year I may be able to video them dive bombing Trixie as she tinkles along barely over idle, they almost get under helmet and under tank and have entangled in fork cable wire clusters I had to spread to free. Love calls or fighting words to them - don't know. Hey I was almost turtle food once on Peel, but no one teases me about turtle soup jokes. Lay down with just one ok two goats and never live it down : )
