Absolutely Dave, in theory this should be a low stress area,hence the retainers, but when not shimmed correctly at the center it sure becomes a stress area when someone thightens these to bring the inner flush to the case. That and the smallish threads and this large inner cover will trick ones common sence.

I added threaded inserts on my last rebuild, along with the drain plug. Even with the inserts, I still get nervous when torquing these to spec.
