As a P.S. IMOP the 3 holes are too high, it looks like someone at the factory has taken a liberty in drilling them higher. I would drill the holes at the normal height of the chain oil.

As I've already said, that's where the holes are on all Triumph twins '70-on.

No need, as it doesn't appear to cause any problems.

Triumph totally lost the plot and removed the crank oil seal to allow engine oil into the chain case so as to maintain the oil level in the chaion case as the service dept had found the average owner ran their primary chains dry and rusty......but at least they included 3 small drain holes back into the crank cases to maintain the required oil level!!....

....Only, they don't!

If you had ever examined a 1970-on Triumph crankcase then it would (should) be fairly obvious that the three (extremely) small holes aren't going to maintain the primary oil at what you might consider to be "the required level" in fact they are hardly any distance below the level of the open case/bearing!

The reason I said IMO about this is it stands to reason that if you want to maintain the oil height just above the primary chain then the hole‘s should be drilled lower, I refer to the earlier statement posted; “....Only, they don't! And ; "it would (should) be fairly obvious that the three (extremely) small holes aren't going to maintain the primary oil at what you might consider to be "the required level" in fact they are hardly any distance below the level of the open case/bearing!"

So if the chaincase gets filled up with oil it will be higher than you need it to be.
Unless Triumph somehow got themselves clutch plates that , unlike Norton, work saturated in oil as discussed on the Other Norton site,

That would seem to be the case (sorry!) at least 'in theory'.

If you think how many Triumph '70-on twins (500, 650 and 750) were made then it doesn't seem to have been a problem otherwise no doubt they would have done something about it eventually, however, the reason why the holes were drilled significantly higher than what could be considered the 'normal' oil level I have no idea?
