I bought a new rear drum from Andover, part number 06-2764, and a BCA sealed bearing, part number NB5203KZZE. My understanding is I will have to mill a bit off the inner shoulder in the drum to accomodate the thicker bearing? Will this also affect the number shims I found between the felt seal and the bearing (3).

Sounds like you have the wrong bearing. You need a 4203 2RS=17mm x 40mm x 16mm rubber seal each side. No machining needed. It's Not a shim between the felt washer and bearing, just something to keep the grease in the original unsealed bearing.

Not sure about the bearing you have, but ZZ means metal seals both sides.

4203 2rs is an SKF part number, I sold that brand for years. The BCA I have is sealed, not shielded but it is about .055 thicker. I think it's the bearing Old Britts used to use on his conversions. He mentioned having to machine the bearing recess deeper and also taking .055 off the end of the stub axle. More research needed on my part.

Stop.
Drop.
Roll.

Any benifits of an angular contact bearing in this application?

I'd guess the 5203 angular contact bearing was probably chosen (by OldBritts) because it was the nearest equivalent size (17.5mm wide) sealed bearing to the original double-row (16mm wide) 4203 bearing that wasn't available as a sealed bearing then.

I started down this worry path myself after reading that same OldBrits tech write up. Was quickly put to rest by folks here that there are now correct sized bearings readily available, no machining needed.

Perhaps we should modify the oldbrits document, at least the copy we have posted in the tech info section, to reflect this information? Could save others uneeded effort.
