Hi I just ordered some tank Norton transfers from Andover and for the 73-4 years they only have a blackline boarder around instead of solid gold. What is correct. I'm sending out my tank , side covers to get repainted. Black and gold of course. Let's hear your opinions. Thanks
Cheers,
Tom

There are my thoughts and others in the above linked thread. The AN gold with black surround "Norton " stickers #06-2021 (shown below)they sell do not look correct for your 850. You will not find the correct original superseded gold with black surround stickers( again, see linked thread), so you might as well go with the solid gold ones # 06-4880 that were their replacements, everyone now uses.

This is all 'to the best of my knowledge/research', so I'm in no way claiming it's absolutely accurate:
The above badge is correct for pre-'71 as far as I can tell.
For '72 they kept the same design with the split 'O' but in single colour - also 'D' 1/4" single pinstripe on Roadsters, single 1/4" stripe on Interstates.
850s were single colour and the 'O' was solid, not split. Pinstripes were double 1/8"

I think...

According to '71 and '72 parts books:
"062021 Decal "Norton" Gold/Black Edge"

The 1972 brochure 'gold' look as if it has a black edge to me, at least.

Certainly from around May '73 when improved decals were introduced (see Service Release in previous thread link) however, the gold decal in the '73 brochure looks as if it has a black border to me.

According to the '73 (750/850) parts book the "Gold" decal was 062931

The improved gold decal was 064880.

The above is how the Titanic came to me, with tins, not fiberglass, but painted fireflake blue with the black-bordered gold graphics, and no pinstripes, like a '72. I will be trying to replicate the metallic blue with silver livery as illustrated in the '73 brochure.

The blue 850s I've seen had silver graphics, and not all had a black border - some certainly were plain silver.
I've seen different copies of that brochure which seem to indicate both were possible...

Yes, there is the blue 850 Mk1A with what appears to be plain silver Norton decal the '73 brochure, although a Mk1A shouldn't really be in the '73 brochure unless it's a later revised copy?

Danno,I do not think the "Norton" on your bike's fuel tank came with a black surround. It looks solid gold to me. Heres a photo of it.( I was not sure the it was original factory paint , but I cant remember, I believe I noticed evidence of a respray underneath the tank.

My Feb 74 850 mk2 red tank silver applied logo no border closed "O".

By Feb. '74, they should be the later improved 064882 (silver) decals (introduced approx. May '73 according to Norton Service Release N3/52) as listed in the Mk2/2A parts supplement.

Poor memory and eyesight are conspiring against me. I don't believe the factory stayed with the same size flake when they went to metal tanks. The paint on the Titanic was very thick, which is what it takes to smooth off larger flake.
