To me its the '72 Combat Bomb.
Tried the rest either not powerful spunky enough or more
dulled handling ease. No excesses like mirrors or signals,
and as light as factory Cdo's get. Plus I think more '72's
made than any other year so parts abound.
As to the Bomb part, i've two well used Combat that still had
plain ole roller bearings in still fine condition, signs that
these were not lugged bike be vigorous kept spun up.
Also the drag racers preferred early and especially Combat case
to flex better to handle the crank jump rope.

Oh yeah, duh of course if you have best of of each model
to every brand of oil in.

Someone added signals to my 1st Combat but
here's Trixie as she was retrieved from New Orleans just before
Katrina hit and a deer strike.
Plain Jane long in tooth looking but oh yeah a sweet rider.

Just back from a blast on my 70 Fastback, raw is the best description, no frills but loads of fun, still like my Interstate though for the serious journeys! :D

I like my Interstate as well. Really nice midrange torque.
But I have a 69 750 I'm putting back together...
It'll be a little more, how should I say? Socially unacceptable?

Of the seven Commandos I have owned, I liked my 72 Combat the most.

I was 20 years old and maybe 140 pounds then, had the head ported, rocker arms lightened, and got a Dr. Blair 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust. Damn it was fast acceleration!

Wish I still had it now but sold it for another year college tuition.

The next year I bought a new 73 850, and remember how disappointed I was with the drop in raw thrilling power.

My current motor is undergoing a complete rebuild, all new oversize valves, guides, springs, bores hones, new rings, and new Megacycle 5600 cam. It should feel much tighter and stronger, still a couple weeks away from being ready.
Also ready to install is the new clutch hub and Barnett plates, new belt for the primary drive, CNW dual lead high output coil and TriSpark ignition.

It is going to be spectacular!
