I didn't realize it was possible just to add the extra brushes without the field coils. I guess the brushes opposite each other wired together?

Yes.

then all we need is?

If you want to convert to it to 4-brush operation (and I expect dynodave would say it's not worth the effort) then yes, but if you want to do the full upgrade you will also need the Harley Prestolite field coils.

Jimbo, the advantage in getting the HD starter is that you get the 4 brushes, the brush holders, and the field coils. You have to use the "Norton" armature because of its unique pinion gear.

Maybe I should buy this used one for all the parts? Coils, body, brush holders, springs? Then just get new brushes?

Or just get a new one?

Unless you have a 4 brush motor with the associated field coils and just use the Norton armature just go with a Dyno Dave starter. It's a bullet proof unit for reasonable money. Order it and bolt it in, problem solved.

This is what I use , but I had to shoehorn it in. I think there is one that is slightly smaller but I don't know much about it.

Deet, More details please on how you got the PC625 in there. Have you removed the strap mounting point at the other end of the tray to get it further in, hard up against the oil tank? And what's that buckle you've got between the battery strap and the clip? More pics please!

I filed a little relief in the battery case and raised the battery up in the battery tray to clear the area where the strap mounts to the battery tray near the oil tank. I also made as much room as I could above the battery by moving wires around. I tried to insulate the battery from the oil tank by using a piece of Dyno-Mat but that just melted down into a sticky mess. The battery strap does space the battery off the tank slightly. I still wouldn't mind finding some very thin flexible insulating material to place in there, not much room, possibly an 1/8". The front strap bracket I made from some scrap steel, it hinges in the front. That way it drops down out of the way when I unhook the strap. I believe this is the third or fourth season with no problems.
Hope this info is helpful.
