probably a really dumb question. this is really for the alton electric start kit, but the question should cover all alternator types. QUESTION - on an alternator stator, does it make any differenct which way the stator is installed? installed mine, i'm thinking, opposite from it's original position. the only thing i can think of is a 180 degree phase shift on th AC output. haven't done any kind of testing, but i swear, this thing spins the engine much better than before - like it's more efficient charging the battery. more curious than anything....

If indeed there is some performance gain happening and not just a subjective feeling, could be due to slightly different location depth of stator to the spinning rotor. The closer the magnets are to the stator coils, the stronger the field interaction will be (1/r^2 law). So even a thou of an inch difference could change output noticeably.

upgraded the alton starter with the "yves" mod. all the alton pieces/parts were the same, but i'm thinking i flipped the stator assembly during re-assembly. maybe it's me, but i swear this thing starts much better than before. i use to have to charge the battery periodically, and during the yves upgrade, the battery sat static for a couple months. never charged it after the fix, but hit the key, starter button, and she fired right up. i've started it probably a couple dozen times since, and there is a definite, noticable starting improvement. maybe it's wishful thinking on my part - ?????

If the starter is indeed more robust, the difference is likely due to the "yves" mod. I do not know what is involved there, but flipping the stator is not expected to change anything with regards to charging the battery.

Simply putting larger caliber cables from the battery to the starter motor is likely to make the starter action more robust.

in a nutshell, the yves fix provides a mechanical connect from the starter's sprag clutch assembly directly to the engine sprocket. fixes a design flaw in the alton system that some folks experience. there is nothing electrical in the modification.
