Re: anyone in Surrey UK pstcode KT and would take a look

If bike has been stood for a while unused, then problems with carbs are pretty likely. If so then you could try ultrasonic cleaning, which will work in some cases. Its pretty easy to work out if lack of fuel is the problem though, all you need to do is to get a couple of people to help, 2 aerosol cans of carb or brake cleaner, remove air cleaners and squirt the aerosols into the carbs at the point where the motor stops running.

If it continues to run when the carb cleaner is being used, there is no need to mess around with fitting alternative carbs, and you then try getting your OE carbs properly cleaned, but if that doesnt work you will need a new pair of carbs, which is a good idea anyway as Amal carbs are almost always totally worn out after very few miles, and modern alcohol enhanced fuels tend to make them wear out even faster!

Re: anyone in Surrey UK pstcode KT and would take a look

its fixed!! well almost

thanks to rich from here for coming over last night
we tried a boyer module and set of plugs and a set of coils

so that narred it down to carbs

he recommended asking Norman white down at Thruxton to take a look as he had used his services a couple of times

i called him told him the symptoms and he told me the fault straight away..

contaminated fuel from the fibreglass fuel tank breaking down
he was spot on and even though the carbs wernt blocked apparently they get a film on them

so i took them all out again and left to soak in thinners as he said, whilst carb cleaning all the internal galleries again

hooked up a fuel supply through a big springe and tried it again,it ran and sounded too rich almost straight away backed off the choke halfway and it was still running ,after about a minute i took the choke straight off and it runs
quick mixture and idle adjust and its ticking over lovely

im still in shock !! :)

i now need to order a steel tank though and paint it

on closer exam of the original tank has several blisters in the paint so its def had it
Norman said it can be repaired but the steel tank is £260 so im probably going for one of those

happy days :)

Re: anyone in Surrey and would take a look update . Its FIX

People complain about the cost of steel tanks, but it looks like they are about the same as new carbs (and no messing with the jets).

Didn't realise you had a glass tank.....should have asked. Well done and thanks for letting us know, you can get riding now. BTW whose fuel was in the tank? I know we can have up to 5% Ethanol but it depends on brand I guess. So far my POR15 sealer hasn't broken down (steel tank) but it may be a matter of time! Happy riding.
