Hello. I'm Brand new to the forum.

I have a 70 commando.
I know my way around the bike mechanically (for the most part). However my wiring is a mess - it's so bad that I'm tearing it all out. Problem is- I have NO IDEA about electrics. The only thing I have goin for me is that I'm very intuitive and eager to learn it myself so i'll be very prepared should another electrical problem arise.

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any tips, tricks or input on getting my custom harness down to as few wires as possible.I'm also wondering if anyone has or knows of a easy to follow wiring diagram for a 1970 with a SPARX 3 phase high output alternator, and a Boyer. I have no signals. just a horn, a light and a tail light. I have bought all the wires and connectors + shrink and ties from Colorado Norton Works so I'm ready to go. I'm planning on ONLY crimping with a very good crimp tool and skipping soldering- This has been recommended by a few people.

I'm also curious on any wire twisting techniques and making good connectors, Also, any tips on how to get the harness down to as few wires as possible.

I'm really trying to make this bulletproof. Ready to ride across the US and back.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!

THANKS!
Brian

Hi Brian I await the replies you get with interest. Not to jump on your post but i have a 1970S and am thinking of doing exactly the same as you and i am like you by the sounds. If its mechanical i will have a go and usually get it right but electrical is another matter altogether.
I am in the process of sourcing the sparx upgrade kit and have a pazon fitted to the bike already so assume it will be exactly the same as the boyer. The aim is to make the thing as bulltetproof as possible connector and wiring wise.

Hi Brian, I don't have a Sparx diagram but I do have a Boyer colour one which I made up with all the wires coloured as they should be, I have included both Pos + and Neg - earths should you decide to go Neg. Hope it helps.

Now that the forum has a working "search" function, you should easily be able to find at least a half-dozen very inlved threads on the matter, a couple of them very recent.

Everything from positive to negative ground conversion, all the way to aftermarket quick-connects.

Thanks for the Diagram! Do you happen to have a diagram on for the rest of the connections?

I'll also check the search function.

Cheers.

The "old Brits " Link from Ron L & swooshdave is good , it is fairly simple to do in colour but if you need it I will do it for you, it would be basic as I am a novice atthe drawings and might not be right away as I'm going away from 24/04 - 09/05 but 's it's in the middle of nowhere I will have limited internet time.

Brian,

Here is a link to a recent thread regarding my installation of a Sparx 3-phase:

sparx-wiring-trouble-t3704.html

It's not very difficult. I was able to complete the installation thanks to this feedback, and I'm about an idiot, so there you go.
